Buhari Anti Corruption War
Buhari Anti Corruption War
CORRUPTION WAR:
ONE YEAR AFTER
DataPro
Since 1995
The fight against corruption requires a functional infrastructure. Strong political will,
commitment and leadership at the highest level are not enough.
A strong and well-coordinated network of state institutions and agencies is fundamental to
the success of any campaign.
In Nigeria one of the major hindrances to the fight against corruption is the poor state of
institutions and agencies needed for a successful campaign.
Urgent reforms and enhancement are needed at these levels
1. The Nigerian Legal System
2. The Anti-Corruption Agencies
3. Compliance Level of Reporting Entities
4. Identification Management
5. Corporate Registry
6. Geographic Information System (GIS)
7. Border Control
5:0. OFFICIAL CORRUPTION STATISTICS: ARRESTS,
PROSECUTION, CONVICTIONS AND ASSET RECOVERY
INTRODUCTION
To have a sense of what has been lost to official corruption in Nigeria we will
quote the President.
In July 2015 shortly after he returned from a state visit to the United States,
President Muhammadu Buhari was quoted as saying “…over $150billion has
been siphoned out of Nigeria in the 10years to 2015”
His conclusion substantiates the Global Financial Integrity report which claimed
that $182b was stolen and laundered offshore in Nigeria between 2000 and
2009.
According to a special report of the African Union (AU) released in 2015, out of
the $60b illegally transferred annually out of African by 2010, $40.9b of it came
from Nigeria.
In this chapter we will consider the score card of the Buhari Administration in its
desire to fight official corruption based on available information.
