FUNDING AGENCIES

Introduction
 Research funding is a term covering any funding for scientific
research, in the areas of both- science and technology and
social science.
 Sources of research funding-
o Corporations
o Government
 Some scientific research are carried out by charitable
foundations.
 Total research funding in most developed countries is between
1.5% and 3% of GDP.
Government-funded
research
Many governments of developed countries
provide considerable funds for scientific
research as well as social science research.

Much of this is not intended to provide concrete results that


may be commercialisable, although research in scientific
fields may lead to results that have such potential.

In the 18th century, most of the scientific researches were carried


out by the people investing their own funds.
Thus, system of PATENTS were applied to the scenario to allow
inventors a period of time to commercialize their inventions and
recoup a profit.

In the twentieth century, scientific and technological research


became increasingly systematized, as corporations developed,
and discovered that continuous investment in research and
development could be a key element of success in a competitive
strategy.
AICTE

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is a Body


established by the Government of India through Act No. 52 of 1987
with a view to proper planning and coordinated development of
Technical Education (TE) system throughout the Country.

Technical Education includes the fields of Engineering, Technology,


Architecture, Town Planning, Management, Hotel Management &
Catering Technology, Pharmacy and Applied Arts & Crafts.
AICTE

Travel Grant : Enables meritorious teachers to interact at


international level Conference / Seminar / Symposium etc.
Teachers from AICTE approved Technical Institutions / University
departments are eligible for this grant.
Seminar Grant : provides a forum for interaction of academicians
and working professionals and opportunity for sharing of
innovations and inventions. AICTE approved Technical Institutions /
University departments are eligible for this grant. Professional
bodies, registered societies, national agencies are also eligible
provided that the seminar is organized in collaboration with AICTE
approved Technical Institutions / University departments imparting
technical education.
 Career Award for Young Teachers : Identifies young talented
teachers for promoting their professional growth by enabling
them to devote maximum time in research and study with
minimum teaching responsibility.

 Post Graduate Scholarship Scheme : In pursuance of the policy


framework for Promotion of Post-Graduate Education and
Research in Technical Education as announced by Ministry of
Human Resource Development, AICTE is implementing and
running PG Scholarship scheme in the field of technical
education for the study of post graduate students in Engineering
and Technical institutions. The students who qualify GATE
examination get valid score card in different subject fields and
become eligible for GATE scholarship under existing PG
Scholarship Scheme. A valid GATE scorer receives scholarship.

Foreign Travel Grant- (for young Scientist /Research Scholars not


in regular employment.

The Award of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize For Science and
Technology.

RESEARCH GRANTS

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship (SPMF)
Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize

 The Prize is given each year for outstanding contributions to


science and technology.

SSB Prizes, each of the value of Rs 5,00,000 (Rupees five lakh


only), are awarded annually for notable and outstanding
research, applied or fundamental, in the following disciplines:
(1)Biological, (2) Chemical, (3) Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and
Planetary, (4) Engineering, (5) Mathematical, (6) Medical, and
(7) Physical Sciences.

Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field likescience


and technology up to the age of 45 years Overseas citizen
of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO)
working in India are also eligible.
CSIR GRANTS

The assistance is provided by way of grants to the Professors/Experts


in regular employment, in the universities, IITs, post-graduate
institutions.

Investigators working in Government Research Laboratories/


Establishments are generally not eligible for the grant.

Applications for research grants can be submitted at any time during


the year.
CSIR JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (JRF)

 A certain number of JRFs are awarded each year by CSIR to


those holding MSc or equivalent degree, with minimum 55%
marks after qualifying the National Eligibility Test ( NET)
conducted by CSIR twice in a year.

STIPEND-
 Rs 25000/ p.m for a period of 2 years.
 On Completion of two years as JRF, the stipend may be
increased to Rs. 28000/- p.m for the 3rd and subsequent year
 CSIR SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (SRF)
 MSc, BE, BTech with minimum 60% marks and at least two years
of post MSc, BE, BTech, research experience.
OR
 MBBS or BDS (with 1 year if internship) with first division
OR
 BPharm/BSc(Ag) or equivalent degree with
minimum 60% marks and at least three years of
research experience.

 Research workers who have had requisite training in methods of


research along with above qualification and who have proved
their aptitude for original research are eligible for this
Fellowship.
AGE LIMT : The upper age limit for SRF shall be 32 years.
STIPEND
 Rs.25000/- pm for 1st, 2nd year.
 Rs.33000/- for the subsequent years depending on progress of
research having been assessed as satisfactory.

The University Grants Commission (UGC)


came into existence on 28th December, 1953
and became a statutory Organization of the
Government of India by an Act of Parliament in
1956, for the coordination, determination and
maintenance of standards of teaching,
examination and research in university

assistance
under the
category 'Seminar' is limited to Rs. 70,000/-
only.
 State and National Level Conferences : The UGC assistance in
case of State Level Conferences should be limited to Rs.
80,000/- and that for a National Level Conference to Rs. 1.00
lakh.
 International Conferences : The UGC assistance will be of Rs.
1.5 lakh only.

Department of Biotechnology (DBT)

Introduction- The setting up of a separate Department of


Biotechnology (DBT), under the Ministry of Science and
Technology in 1986 gave a new development of the field of
modern biology and biotechnology in India. In more than a decade
of its existence, the department has promoted and accelerated the
pace of development of biotechnology in the country.
Through several R&D projects, demonstrations and creation of
infrastructural facilities a clear visible impact of this field has been
seen. The department has made significant achievements in the
growth and application of biotechnology in the broad areas of
agriculture, health care, animal sciences, environment, and
industry.

Department Of Science and Technology (DST)

Introduction- The Department of Science & Technology plays a


pivotal role in promotion of Science & Technology in the country.
Science & Technology Policy-2003 states that “Special emphasis will
be placed on equity in development, so that the benefits of
technological growth reach the majority of the population,
particularly the disadvantaged sections, leading to an improved
quality of life for every citizen of the country.”

The Department supports research through a wide variety of


schemes specifically carved out to meet the requirements of
different sections of the scientific and engineering community.
Schemes under DST
INSPIRE Award

In order to seed and experience the joy of innovation, every year two lakh school
children in the age-group of 10 to 15 years i.e., 6th to 10th standards are being
identified for the INSPIRE Award. Each INSPIRE Award envisions an investment of
Rs.5,000/- per child. The scheme plans to reach at least two students per secondary
school during the next five years.
INSPIRE Scholarship

This scheme offers 12,000 scholarships every year @ Rs.80,000/- each for undertaking
Bachelor and Masters level education in the Natural & Basic sciences, possessing any of the
following criteria:

[A]Students who happen to be among the top 1% in 12th standard at their respective Board
Examinations and are pursuing courses in Natural and Basic sciences at the B.Sc. or
Integrated M.Sc. levels. Courses are not included other than Natural and Basic sciences in the
current scheme in view of the focus on research in Basic sciences.
INSPIRE Fellowship-

INSPIRE fellowship aims at enhancing research fellowships for doctoral studies and
opening up partnerships with private sector for topping the Government's efforts
in nurturing talents for scientific research. This scheme is applicable to Basic and
Applied sciences as well as Medicine, Agriculture etc. with provision of multiple
entries. The fellowship will be offered to:

(1) INSPIRE Scholar having secured minimum 70% marks (or CGPA equivalent) in
aggregate at M.Sc. or Integrated M.S. / M.Sc.

(2) 1st Rank Holder at University level examination in each Post-Graduate (PG)
level examinations in Basic/ Applied Sciences including Engineering, Medicine,
Pharmacy, Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Sciences from any recognized
University and academic Institutions (Excluding Autonomous Colleges) in India

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Fellowship – The Indian
Institute Of Science, Government of India has launched
the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) for encouraging
the 10th passed students having science stream and are
studying Basic Sciences to take up research career in Science.
The central government has started this scheme in the year
1999.
For XI Class-
Those students who have taken admission in 11th Class with
Science Subjects in the academic year 2018-19
Minimum marks in 10th Class in Maths and Science must be 75%
(For SC/ST, the Minimum Marks must be 65%).

CBSE Scholarship scheme for


Single Girl Child
Aim of CBSE Scholarship:
CBSE Udaan Program The main aim of this scholarship is to

Maulana Azad Scholarship

Aim of Maulana Azad Scholarship:


To encourage education among girl students of minority community.
Offered to:
Class 11 girl students from minority community.
Eligibility:
Girl students must have completed class 10 exams with at least 55 percent marks.
Family income of the student should be less than Rs. 1 lakh per annum.
Scholarship:
Every year, 35,000 girls are selected for this scholarship.
This is a merit-based single-time scholarship as girls once selected for this scholarship,
cannot get it again. Interested students will have to apply through the website of
Maulana Azad Foundation, who provides this scholarship for meritorious minority girls.
