“Although most people view
screens binocularly, people
frequently use smartphones while
lying down, when one eye can be
inadvertently covered” said the
doctors.
Using smartphone in bed while
lying on their side causes
temporarily blind because their
closed eye may have become
adapted to the dark, while the other
eye looking at the phone became
adapted to the light.
When the smartphone is eventually
turned off, the light-adapted eye is
perceived to be “blind” until it also
adjusts to the dark. That’s because it’s
taking many minutes to catch up the
other eye that’s adapted to the dark. The
temporarily blindness usually lasts for
5-10 minutes.
STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE TO
PROTECT YOUR EYES
• Look at your screen straight on, instead of
from the position on your side.

• Use the 20-20-20 rule to avoid eye strain.

• When your eyes feel dry, refresh them with

artificial tears.
• Adjust the lighting in your room so
your screen is not much brighted
than the surrounding light.

• Try increasing the contrast on your

screen.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR
YOUR ATTENTION. 
