 The international classification of disease
(ICD) is standard diagnostic tool for
epidemiology, health management and
clinical purpose.
 This include the analysis of the general
health situation of population groups.
 It is used to monitor the incidence and
prevalance of disease and other health
problems.
Definition
ICD permits systematic recording,
analysis, interpretation and
comparison of morbidity and
mortality data collected in
different countries or areas and at
different time.
 Classification of disease is a system of
grouping together morbid entities
according to some established criteria.
 Classification according to variety of
criteria-
 Anatomical (i.e. the part of body affected)
 Pathological (i.e. changes caused in body by
disease process)
 Clinical (i.e. the way in which the disease
manifest itself)
 It is the translation of narrative descriptions of disease,
injuries and procedures into alphanumeric codes.

Why do we need to code

 Plan appropriate health services.

 Classify patterns of disease.

 Forecast health needs.

 Study epidemiology

 Standardized reporting system for easy assimilation

 Provide teaching material for medical education

 Evaluate healthcare with appropriate measures.

 First known classification of disease dates
back to the year 1700- Estimate the
proportion of death of live born children
before the age of six.
 1853- Need for international classification of
disease was recognized and all diseases were
classified in 139 separate groups under five
general headings.
 1891- Prepare classification of disease.
 1900- first international conference for
revision of list of cause of disease.
 1948 – sixth revision published.
 1955- Seventh edition.
 1965- Eight edition.
 1977- Ninth edition
 1993- Tenth edition (Latest in series)
 Structure- Three volumes of ICD- 10.
 Chapters- 21 chapters.
 Codes- Alphanumeric codes.
 Volume 1 of ICD-9 is volume 1 of ICD-
10 and volume 2 of ICD-9 is volume 2
and 3 of ICD- 10.
