 National development refers to the
government’s efforts to uplift society and
nation from backwardness to advancement
and prosperity.
 The task includes economic, social,
psychological and political aspects.
National development
 The development should enable people to
fulfill their potentials so that they can
possess the basic necessities like food,
clothing, shelter, employment and equal
opportunities.

Malaya Plan 1 (1956 – 1960)
objectives:
 to develop the rural sector

 to reduce the poverty rate

 to diversify the economic activities and


sources of income
Main Objective
 Develop rural area to improve the standard
of living; reduce illiteracy; enhance the
standard of health; eradicate poverty.
 Reduce unemployment; improve the
standard of living for the lower income
groups

 Rural Industrial Development Authority
(RIDA) was launched. (later - MARA)

Objective:
 to encourage, guide, train and help
Bumiputras to become competence
entrepreneurs and traders

 to downsize the current economic
recession
 to embark upon heavy industry’s sector
(HICOM)
