Introduction

• We devolped voice controlled wheel chair in order to

assist physically challenged persons.
• This presentation describes the design of a smart,
motorized, voice controlled wheelchair using embedded
system.
• Proposed design supports voice activation system for
physically disabled persons where the voice command
controls the movements of the wheelchair.

Motivation (Project Concept and its relevance)
• The motivation behind this project is to built an
automated wheel chair that helps the physically disabled
peoples to locomote from one place to another .
• The idea of building voice controlled wheel chair is to
overcome some disadvantages of the existing systems, the
normal pushing wheel chair primitive one in which the
user need to push the chair with the hands.it has a stress
on the user when travelling for the long distance. With
the help of technology and human intelligence the idea of
automated wheelchair is evolved.

Aims and Objectives
Title:Voice controlled wheel chair for physically challenged
people
Aim: To control the wheel chair by human voice or
commands
Objectives:
• To implement the voice user as an input to
control the movement of wheel chair.
• To provide the facilties for disabled people and
elderly people who cant move properly.

• The system has two parts, namely; hardware and software. The
hardware architecture consists of an embedded system that is
based on Arduino Uno board, a Bluetooth Module, Motor Driver
and an Android phone.
• The Bluetooth Module provides the communication media
between the user through the android phone and the system by
means of voice command given to the android phone.
• The user speaks the desired command to the “BT Voice Control for
Arduino voice (AMR Voice Application)” software application
installed in the android phone that is connected through Bluetooth
with Bluetooth Module SR-04. The voice command is converted to
an array of string and the string is passed to Arduino Uno
connected to it.

• Once the Bluetooth Module receives the message, the
command sent will be extracted and executed by the
microcontroller attached to it and depending on the
commands fed to the Motor Driver, the motors will
function accordingly. The system will interpret the
commands and control the Wheelchair accordingly via
android application.

Outcomes
• Prototype of the wheelchair which operates on human
voice command .
• After receiving the data the chair responses according to
the command by performing proper movement to the
proper direction according to the voice command given.
• The android device sends commands to move the vehicle
in forward, backward, right and left directions.
• Meanwhile, the ultrasonic sensor works while the circuit
is on and makes sure the path has no obstacle and if any
obstacle occurs it notifies the Arduino and stops
wheelchair till further command is obtained from the
user.

Conclusions
• The project aims at controlling a wheelchair by means of human
voice. It enables a disabled person to move around independently,
using a voice recognition application which is interfaced with
motors.
• The prototype of the wheelchair is built using a Arduino
UNO chosen for its low cost. The system has been designed and
implemented in a cost effective way so that if our project is
commercialized the needy users in developing countries will benefit
from it.
• The goal of this system will allow certain people to live a life with
less dependence on others for their movement as a daily need.
Speech recognition technology is a key technology which will
provide a new way of human interaction with machine or tools.

Team Experience
• We learnt about Voice-controlled Wheelchair design
based on mobile platforms, by means of Bluetooth
technology, design and implementation of wireless
remote control solutions.
• We got to know the use of different sensor and their
interfacing with the Arduino board.
• We experienced about programming in C and the use of
Arduino IDE etc;
