CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCH

 English has become a lingua franca that is widely adopted for communication
between two speakers whose native languages are different from each other.
Moreover, one or both speakers are using it as a ‘second’ language.
 There are some obvious shortcomings in speaking conducted by students including
many errors in speech or pronunciation in their English, many grammar errors,
pronunciation of long vowel or diphtong sounds
 English in the class is less emphasized on speaking skills, but more focused on the
lesson structure and vocabulary, shame and fear of making mistakes when
practicing speaking.

Education Department students’ perspective at
Islamic University of Makassar?
 What are the factors cause problems in speaking
English by the fourth semester of English
Education Department students at Islamic
University of Makassar?

Objective of The Research

Based on the problems of the study, the objectives of the study are:

 To find out the individual problems in speaking English faced by the


fourth semester of English Education Department students’
perspective at Islamic University of Makassar.

“ SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESEARCH
This study is expected to give significant for:
1. The English teacher, especially speaking teacher: it will give information about
students’ individual speaking problem and their perspective about the problem at
the fourth semester of English Education Department at Islamic University of
Makassar. So the teacher solve the problem in the class.
2. The English department: to make regulation for English Department students to
practice their English speaking.
3. The students: after the students understand about the problems, the students get
help from the teacher and English Education Department to practice their English.
4. The readers and the researcher: it will give the readers and the researcher
knowledge about the students’ individual speaking problem.

Scope of The Research
✘ This study is limited to the fourth semester students of
English education department at Universitas Islam Makassar.
This study focuses to describe what are the speaking
individual problems by the fourth semester students’
perspective and then analyze the factors that cause their
individual problem in speaking english
