Co-ordinate Measuring Machine

(CMM)

PREPARED BY MEIYALAGAN R K
Objectives
After studying this , you should be able to

 Familiarise yourself with parts of a CMM,

and
 Understand the principle and the working of
a CMM
 Measuring the geometry of physical objects
by sensing discrete points on the surface of
the object with a probe
INTRODUCTION
A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is a device for measuring the
physical geometrical characteristics of an object i.e. its dimensions. The
machine may also be used to measure features, form, orientation, etc.

 CMM may be classified in the following ways:

 On the basis of the contact made by probe

WHAT IS CO-ORDINATE MEASURING MACHINE ?

A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is a device

that measures the geometry of physical objects by sensing
discrete points on the surface of the object with a probe.
Various types of probes are used in CMMs, including
mechanical ,optic laser and white light .

 CMM is the 3D devic e used for measuring physical

geometrical characteristics of an object.
 CMM is a machine which takes reading in six dgrees
of freedom.
 CMM is the specialized form of industrial robot.
What are the types of CMM?

There are four main types of

coordinate measuring machine
(CMMs):
 bridge,
 cantilever,
 gantry and
 horizontal arm
COMPONENTS OF CMM

Parts
CMM includes three main components :

 Main Structure
which includes three axes of motion
 Probing system
 Data collection and reduction system

 Application software
 Machine Controller
 Desktop computer
PROBE USED IN CMM

 A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is a

device that measures the geometry of physical
objects by sensing discrete points on the surface
of the object with a probe. Various types
of probes are used in CMMs, including

CMM IN COMPUTER AIDED MANUFACTURING

What is Computer Aided Manufacturing used

for?
 Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) is the use
of software and computer-controlled machinery
to automate a manufacturing process.
 Based on that definition, you need three
components for a CAM system to function:
 Software that tells a machine how to make a
product by generating toolpaths
Advantages
CMM has got a number of advantages. The precision
and accuracy given by a CMM is very high. It is
because of the inherent characteristics of the
measuring techniques used in CMM. Following are the
main advantages that CMM can offer :

 Flexibility
 Reduced Setup Time
 Single Setup
 Improved Accuracy
 Reduced Operator Influence
 Productivity

Speed - indexing is faster than stylus changing (done

during CMM moves)
Dynamic response - simple, light styli make for a lower
suspended mass

Automation - programmable probe

changing with no manual intervention
required
touch-trigger, scanning and optical
