PRESS WORKING TERMINOLOGY

PRESS
• A forming press, commonly shortened to press,
is a machine tool that changes the shape of a
workpiece by the application of pressure.
• Press tools are commonly used in
Hydraulic press
Pneumatic press
Mechanical presses
• to produce components at a high productivity
rate.
• Generally press tools are categorized by the
types of operation performed using the tool,
such as
• blanking
• piercing
• bending
• forming
• forging
• trimming etc.
• The press tool will also be specified as blanking
tool, piercing tool, bending tool etc.
Press Working :
• Press working may be defined as, a
manufacturing process by which various
components are made from sheet metal.

• This process is also termed as cold stamping.

• machine used for press working is called a

press.
• PRESS ACCESSORIES

• Dies
• Platen option
• Power unit
• Hydraulic unit
• Floor stands
• Safety shields
• Dies
polished plates
evacuable pallet dies
test cylinder outfits (TCO's)
filter pads
die plate kits and more.
Platen option
to meet the specific demands of your
application.
• Power units
convert hand operated presses to
automatic operation with power units.
• Hydraulic unit
contain hydraulic oil, seals, gaskets, pins, fittings,
valve parts and instructions needed to rebuild the
unit.

• Floor stands
suitable for bench press models
Includes enclosed floor stands for 2 and 4 column
presses,
floor stands with casters for 2 and 4 column
presses and press stands for Auto Series presses.
• Safety shields
commended for use on all presses.
to protect operator from objects which
might fly from the compression area.
Hinged front access door is clear,
shatterproof polycarbonate.
• 1: Bed:
Lower part of the press frame
serves as a table to which a Bolster plate is
mounted.

2: Bolster Plate:
Used for locating and supporting the die
assembly
5 to 12.5 cm thick.

3: Die Set:
It is unit assembly which incorporates :
lower and upper shoe
two or more guide parts
guide part bushings.
4: Die Block:
Block or a plate which contains a die
cavity.

5: Lower Shoe:
Mounted on the bolster plate of a press
The die block and the guide post are
mounted on it.

6: Punch :
Directly or indirectly moved by and
fastened to the press ram or slide
7: Upper Shoe:
upper part of the die set which contains guide
post bushings.

8: Punch Plate :
Also known as punch retainer
Fits closely over the body of the punch and
holds it in proper relative position.

9: Back up Plate:
Also known as pressure plate
To control the intensity of pressure on
punch holder.
It distributes the pressure over a wide
area.
10: Stripper:
Plate which is used to strip the metal strip from cutting a
non-cutting Punch or die.
To guide the sheet.

11:Knock Out:
Knock out mechanism is used to erase the workpiece from
a die.
It is connected to and operated through the press ram.

12:Pitman
Pitman is a connecting rod that is used to transmit the
motion from the major drive shaft to the press slide.
Press working
• Cutting operation:
operations
• In cutting operations the work piece is stressed by
its ultimate strength. The stresses caused in the
metal the applied forces will be shear stresses. The
cutting operations include:
• (a) Blanking
• (b) Punching
• (c) Notching
• (d) Perforating
• (e) Slitting
• Forming operation:
• In forming operations , the stresses are
below the ultimate strength of the metal , in
this operation , there is no cutting of the
metal but only the contour of the work piece
is changed to get the desired product.
• The forming operations include:
• (a) Bending
• (b) Drawing
• (c) Squeezing
