Origins of thegame
IN INDIA, THE GAME ORIGINATED IN
BOMBAY, IN THE PRESENT DAY
VICTORIA TERMINUS REGION
IN 1772, FEARING AN ATTACK BY THE FRENCH, THE BRITISH CLEARED
THE AREA OUTSIDE THE FORT AND PREPARED A MASSIVE GROUND TO
PROVIDE A RANGE OF FIRING.
LATER, THIS GROUND WAS USED AS A VENUE FOR PERFORMING
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
BRITISHERS PLAYED THE GAME OF CRICKET IN THE CORNERS,
LOCALS WATCHED IN AWE AS IT REMINDED THEM OF GAMES LIKE
GILLI DANDA AND 'ASOOKH MAHASOOKH'
IM ITATION
(1848-1900)
THE PARSIS (TRADERS) OF BOMBAY ESTABLISHED
THE ORIENTAL CRICKET CLUB IN 1848
This club was dissolved in two years, and the Young Zoroastrian Club
was formed in 1850s. They waged a struggle for playing in the
Bombay Gymkhana premises, which was dominated by the polo
players. Their leader, Sorabji Shapoorjee Bengalee, played an
important role in making the Parsi team a force to reckon with...

MUSLIMS AND HINDUS
FOLLOW SUIT...
In September , 1892, the government alloted the Islam
Gymkhana a plot of land next to the Parsi Gymkhana
(425 square feet)
As expected, the Hindus too demanded a separate
plot of land for playing cricket. The government
complied with their demands a n d granted land of
strictly the same size as the Parsis a n d the Muslims

Voices
of
cricket
in India
These are the people who make cricket a treat to 'hear'. The game is more about the
sounds that it generates, and these voices symbolise the united voice of India! You may
have recognised Harsha Bhogle and Aakash Chopra...
CAN YOU RECOGNISE THE LEGEND BEFORE THEM?
A DA PTA BILITY
Cricket is a dynamic game, and has
evolved wonderfully over a period of
time. The advent of ODIs and T20s is a
case in itself
