 Flight lasted 8 minutes.

 Balloon went 1500 ft (2 miles) into the air.
 They landed safely.

1951

• Russia launched two

dogs Tsygan and
Dezik into space on a
R-1 rocket.
• Both dogs survived
the flight.

 USA launched two Phillipine

monkeys named Patricia and
Michael on the third Aerobee
launch.
 Patricia was placed in a seated
position and Mike in a prone
position, in order to determine
differences in the effects of
rapid acceleration.
 Both monkeys survived the
flight. Aerobee rocket launch
1957

• The Soviets
launched Sputnik 2
carrying a dog
named Laika.
• She became the first
animal to orbit the
Earth.
Laika
 Laika died just a few hours after
launch due to stress and
overheating.
 Although she did not survive, her
flight proved that a living organism
could be launched into orbit and
survive microgravity.

 The US launched a squirrel

monkey named Gordo aboard a
Jupiter rocket.
 The parachute system failed
and Gordo was lost.
 Although Gordo died, Navy
doctors said that signals on his
respiration and heartbeat
proved that humans could
withstand a similar trip.

1959

 Two monkeys, Able and Baker

were selected for flight on a
Jupiter rocket.
 The monkeys experienced 9
minutes of weightlessness before
returning safely.

1960

 Russia sent Belka and

Strelka on Sputnik 5 and
they spent a day in orbit.
 They became the first
Earth born creatures to
orbit the Earth and return
alive.

1961

 First chimpanzee ever sent to

space was HAM who went on
Mercury Redstone Rocket.
 He had been trained to pull
levers to receive banana pellets
and avoid electric shocks.
 His flight demonstrated the
ability to perform tasks in
microgravity.

1961

 On April 12, 1961 Russian

Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin
became the first human in
space and also the first to orbit
the Earth.
 This was followed by American
Alan B. Shepard’s suborbital
flight on May 5, 1961.
