Significance of the Study
• Lessening of future construction expenses
• Reduction of waste in rice harvesting companies
• Decrease the damaging effects of cement-use
• Provide income generating products for rice farms

8
Why use rice straw ash?
• Pozzolanic properties
• Amount produced after every rice milling

Objectives
The study aims to analyze the workability and flexural strength of
replacing rice straw ash as an alternative for cement in concrete. The
specific objectives of the study are :
1. To identify the changes in the mix proportion of concrete.
2. To determine the workability of fresh concrete with varying replacement of
RSA.
3. To investigate the response of hardened concrete with RSA replacement of 0%,
and 10% and varying water to binder ratio of 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7 using the flexural
strength test
4. To identify the optimal percent replacement of RSA to achieve the best results.

10
Scope and Limitations
• Rice straw ash gathered exclusively from IRRI
• Type I Portland Cement
• Percent Replacement of 0% and 10% only
• Variations of w/c of 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7
• Curing Time: 28 days
• Rectangular mold dimensions of 4x4x16 (in inches)

11
Materials and Methodology
• Concrete molds • Concrete Mixer • Concrete vibrating
rod

12
Materials and Methodology
• Procurement of rice straw ash

13
Materials and Methodology
Preliminary Tests
• Testing for SG: • Dry –rodded Weight:
• Cement • Coarse Aggregates
• Fine Aggregates
• Coarse Aggregates • % Absorption:
• RSA • Fine Aggregates

• Fineness Modulus
• Fine Aggregates
14
Materials and Methodology
• The necessary mixture proportions will be based
from the American Concrete Institute (ACI) mix
design, and;

• A slump cone test will be conducted for

workability.
15
Materials and Methodology
• Concrete molds will be left to harden for
24 hours

• Hardened concrete will be put inside a

curing tank for 28 days
16
Materials and Methodology
• Flexural strength test will be done through the use of the
Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
• Procedure for testing will be followed based on ASTM C78
(third-point Loading)
