Work done is defined as product of the

force and the distance over which the

force is applied. Work is done when a
force is applied to an object and the object
is moved through a distance. For example,
when you lift a load you are applying a
force over a distance so you are
doing work
What is the formula for work in physics?

Whenever 'work' is done energy is

transferred from one place to another. The
amount of work done is expressed in
the equation: work done = force x
distance. Power is a measure of how
quickly work is being done. Power is
expressed in the equation: power
= work done / time taken.
• FORCE
• DISPLACEMENT
• EXTENT TO WHICH THE FORCE CAUSES OR HINDERS THE
DISPLACEMENT

• COMES UP WITH A FORMULA OF

W= F D COS(THETA)
• Is not just any angle you see on the FBD.
NEWTON-METER
Problem 1
A body moves through a displacement of 4 m while a force F of 12
Newton acts on it.

What is the work done by the force on

the body?
Answer
Work = force x displacement
W=FxS
W = 12 x 4
W = 48 joule
Problem 2

A block is pulled by a constant

force of 40 Newton. If the work
done by the force on the block is
680 joule what is the
displacement of the block?
Answer
The displacement of the block
W=FxS
680 = 40 x S
S = 680 / 40
S = 17 meter
• A 100 N force is applied to move a 15 kg object a horizontal distance
of 5 meters at a constant speed.
A 100 N force is
applied at an angle of
F= 100 N 30 to the horizontal
to move a 15 kg
30 object at a constant
speed for a
horizontal distance of
5 km
An upward force
is applied to lift a
15 kg object to a
height of 5
meters at
constant speed.
On many occasions, there is
more than one force acting
upon an object. A free-body
diagram depicts the type of
direction of all forces acting
upon an object.
A 200-N suitcase up 3 flights of stairs ( a height of 10m) and then
pushes it with a horizontal force of 50 N at a constant speed of .5m/s
for a horizontal distance of 35 meters. How much work is done on the
suitcase during this entire motion?
A force of 50 N acts on the block at the angle shown in the diagram.
The block moves a horizontal distance of 3 m. How much work is done
by the applied force?
How much lift is done by an applied force to a 15 N block 3 m vertically
at a constant speed?

A student with a mass of 80 kg runs up 3 flights of stairs in 12 sec. The

student has gone a vertical distance of 8 m. Determine the amount of
work done by the student to elevate his body to his height. Assume
that his speed is constant.
• Calculate the work done by a 2 N force directed at a 30 angle to the
vertical to move a 500 g box a horizontal distance of 400 cm across a
rough floor at a constant speed of .5 m/s

• A tired squirrel (mass of 1 kg) does pushups by applying a force to

that a tired squirrel must do in order to do a 5 J of work
