IGNEOUS ROCKS
Twyfelfontein
Organ Pipes
• Located at Nambia,
South Africa
• Columnar Basalt
• Were formed about
150 million years ago
• The result of the
instrusion of liquid
lava into a slate rock
formation which was
exposed over time
by erosion.
• They resemble organ
pipes
Davolja Varos
“Devil’s Town”
• Located at Toplica,
Serbia
• Described as “Earth
Pyramids” or
“towers” by the
locals
• They are 2 to 15m (6
ft 7 in to 49 ft 3 in)
tall and 4 to 6m (13
to 20 ft) wide at the
base
• Most of the towers
have “caps” or
“heads” of andesite
Basaltic Prisms
of Santa Maria
Regla
• Located at Hidalgo,
Mexico
• The canyon walls are
lined by polygonal
columns between 30
and 50 metres (98
and 164 ft) high,
with five or six sides
each.
• The visible columns
are backed by even
more polygonal
basalt columns.
