INTRODUCTION
 DRUG:
 A drug is natural or chemical substance which may
have medicinal intoxicating, performance enhancing
or other effects when taken.
CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS
 PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS
Chemicals that are designed to prevent , diagnose, treat,
or cure a disorder. Also called as medicine.
e.g. Aspirin, Paracetamol, Brofin etc.
RECREATIONAL DRUGS
A drug used without medicinal justification often taken for
enjoyment, or leisure purposes rather than for medical
reason.
e.g. cocaine, marijuana, alcohol etc.
DRUG ABUSE:
 Drug abuse is the non permissive consumption of certain
substance that may lead to physical and psychological
dependence.
 It was popularized in 1960s by mass media they invade all
aspects of society.
 There are about 8.5 lakh drug abusers in India.
 Punjab is one example of highest drug addicts in our
country.

 Alcohol
 Cocaine
 Heroine
 Marijuana
 Prescriptional drugs
 Inhalant and solvents
Why do people abuse drugs?
 Curiousity
 Stress
 Inaccurate information about drugs
 Anger
 Rejection
 Pleasure
 Poor self-image
EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE
 Cardiovascular effects
 Neurological damage
 Memory loss
 Weakened immune system
 Lung disease
 Mental disorder
 Hormonal effects
 Kidney & Liver damage
 Death
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
 Individual steps:
 Awareness, prevention must start at home with parents.
 Ecouraging education, sports and other skills.

 Role of government:
 Provide proper education .
 Reduce the scale of unemployment.
 Removal of drug cartels.
 Strict action against these cartels
TREATMENTS
 Hospitalistion.
 Behavioral therapies.
 Occupational therapy.
 Change in addict’s social environment.
 Send such addicts to a rehabilitation facility.
CONCLUSION
 Drug use and addiction cause a lot of disease and
disability.
 Drug abuse is a complex problem
thought to result from a combination
of hereditary, psychological, and
environmental factors. It affects
 people from the neonatal stage to old age.
 Say no to drugs.
