When a number is substituted or replace for the
variable in a given function, the function will take a
numerical value. And finding the value is what we
call “evaluating the function”
A.Content Standards
The learner demonstrates understanding of key
concepts of functions.
B. Performance Standards
The learner is able to accurately construct
mathematical models to represent real-life
situations using functions.
A.Learning Competencies/Objectives
M11GM-Ia-2, evaluate functions.

• At the end of the lesson, the learner is able to:

1. Evaluate functions
2.Identify the steps in evaluating functions
3.Show appreciation in working with group activity
What is evaluating a function?
Evaluating a Function means replacing the
variable in the function.
It is the process of determining the value of the
function at the number assigned to a given
variable.
To denote that we are evaluating f at a for some a in
the domain of f, we write f(a).
Examples:

1. Let 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2
− 4𝑥 + 4.
Find the following values of the function at;

a.f(2)
b. f(-1)
c. f(0)
Solutions: If x = 2,

a. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4
First, substitute the given value of x to the variable :
𝑓 2 = 22 − 4(2) + 4
Then, simplify: =4−8+4
=0
If x= -1 ,
2
𝑎. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 4 .

First, substitute the given value of x to the variable :

𝑓 −1 = −12 − 4(−1) + 4
Then, simplify: =1+4+4
=9
what is f(0)?
If x= 0
2
a. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 4
2
𝑓 0 = 0 − 4(0) + 4
=0– 0 + 4
=4
Evaluate the function at x= 2

What are the steps in
evaluating a function?
• First, substitute the given value to
the variable in the function

• simplify by performing the

indicated operations.
Evaluate the following functions:
1.

3
2. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 + 4𝑥 − 5𝑥 . find the following values of
the function
𝑎. X(-2)
𝑏. X(3)
