PRESENTATION TO KNUST FINAL YEAR

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING STUDENTS BY :

DR. PETER ACHIREKO (LECTURER)

MR. AMPOMAH WILLIAM (TEACHING ASSISTANT)

INTRODUCTION

 Modern reservoir simulators are computer programs

that are designed to model fluid flow in porous media.

 Applied reservoir simulation is the use of these

programs to solve reservoir flow problems.
INTRODUCTION

 Reservoir flow modeling is the most sophisticated

methodology available for achieving primary reservoir
management objective for hydrocarbon reservoirs.

 It can be defined as the application of a computer

simulation system to the description of fluid flow in a
reservoir.
INTRODUCTION

 The computer simulation system is usually just one or

more computer programs.

 The computer simulation system is called the

RESERVOIR SIMULATOR.

 Whiles the input data set is called the RESERVOIR

FLOW MODEL.
INTRODUCTION

 However, it must be noted that in modern literature

the term reservoir model refers to the geologic model
of the reservoir.

 The simulator serves as a filter that selects from among

all of the proposed descriptions of the reservoir and
provides an objective appraisal of each hypothesis.
RESERVOIR MANAGEMENT

 It is defined as a continuous process that optimizes the

interaction between data and decision making during
the life cycle of a field.

 Also, it is defined as the allocation of resources to

optimize hydrocarbon recovery from a reservoir while
minimizing capital investments and operating
expenses.
RESERVOIR MANAGEMENT

IMPORTANCE

1. Co-ordinate reservoir management activities.

2. Evaluate project performance.
3. Estimate project life
4. Predict recovery versus time
5. Maximize economic recovery
6. Select and optimize project design
7. Compare different recovery processes
8. Plan development or operational changes
ASSIGNMENT
 Write a short essay on why you think reservoir
management is important. (Base your essay on only
three points.)
INTRODUCTION TO IFLO
 The integrated flow model IFLO is a pseudomiscible,
multicomponent, multidimensional fluid flow
simulator.

 It is called an integrated flow model because it

integrates data from all disciplines such as geology,
geophysics, petrophysics and petroleum engineering in
a single software package.

 It can be used to model isothermal, Darcy flow in up to

three dimensions.
INTRODUCTION TO IFLO
 There are two types of input data, initialization data and
recurrent data.

 Initialization data include data that is set in at the

beginning of the study and is not expected to change
during a model run e.g. reservoir description and fluid
properties.

 The recurrent data include data that are expected to

change during the course of simulation. E.g. well
schedules and time step control information.
INTRODUCTION TO IFLO
 It is used to solve problems such as initial fluid volumes
in a reservoir, MBE, kriging, decline curve analysis,
depletion of a gas reservoir etc.

 It assumes that reservoir fluids can be described by up to

three phases (oil, gas and water) with physical properties
that depend on pressure and to an extent composition.

 It must however be noted that IFLO is a modified and

significantly expanded version of MASTER.
‘HANDS-ON’ SIMULATION
These trials will guide you through the application of IFLO
to a wide range of important reservoir engineering
problems.

TRIAL ONE
 Copy all IFLO files to a folder on your hard drive before running the
simulator. Some of the files may be labeled “Read Only” when you copy the
files to your hard drive.
 To remove this restriction, select the file(s) by removing the check symbol
adjacent the “Read Only” attribute.
 What is the size of the executable file IFLO.EXE in megabytes?
‘HANDS-ON’ SIMULATION
TRIAL TWO
 Copy rim_2d to itemp.dat
 Run IFLO by double-clicking on the IFLO.EXE file on your hard drive.
 Select option “Y” to write the run output files.
 When the program ends, it will print “STOP”
 Close the IFLO window.( You do not need to save changes)
 Open run output file ITEMP.ROF and find the line reading “MAX # OF
AUTHORIZED GRIDBLOCKS”
 How many grid blocks are you authorized to use?
 The program IFLO runs the file called ………………………………………
‘HANDS-ON’ SIMULATION
TRIAL THREE
 Double-click on the application entitled 3D VIEW.EXE
 Click on the button “file”
 Click on “ Open Array File”
 Click on “ITEMP.ARR” in the file list.
 Click on OK
 At this point, what do you see? Describe the structure.
 To view different perspectives of the structure, hold the left mouse button
down and move the mouse.
 To exit 3D VIEW, click on the “file” button and then click “Exit”
