INTRODUCTION
-A rubber latex is collected from rubber tree, specifically from Hevea
brasilienis species, through the process called tapping. After this procedure,
the rubber latex are coagulated using formic acid. The addition of acid for
coagulation prepares the rubber sheets for the production process. Other
companies use acetic acid as alternative to formic acid. Since these two
commercial acids are petrochemicals, an alternative, more sustainable
materials is on high demand with rising petrol prices ( Baimark, et al., 2008).
Studies were done by Baimark to test if wood vinegars of Eucalyptus globulus
is as effective as commercial coagulants and results showed that the vinegars
prepared can be used as coagulating and antifungal agents to replace formic
and acetic acids.

-This study is essential in the improvement of the quality of the

rubber products. It can also help reduce the amount of money spent for
commercial coagulants by utilizing locally –available coconut toddy vinegar as
alternative to formic acid as natural rubber latex coagulant. This study is also
significant in producing less hazardous alternative coagulant for the rubber
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
• Determine the potential of coconut
toddy vinegar as rubber latex
coagulant.
• Determine if there is a significant
difference in terms of Plasticity
Retention Index (PRI) between the
samples of natural rubber latex
coagulated with coconut toddy
vinegar and the natural rubber latex
treated with formic acid.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The design that was used
RESEARCH in this study was the Pre-
Post Randomized Group
DESIGN Design.

Three samples for each

RESEARCH treatment were brought to the
DOST for the quantitative
INSTRUMENT analysis of Plasticity Retention
Index.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Knowing whether if there are
DATA significant differences between the
Natural Rubber Latex treated with
GATHERING Coconut toddy vinegar and Natural
Rubber Latex treated with formic acid
PROCEDURE in terms of their Plasticity Retention
Index (PRI)

To determine if there was significant

difference between the experimental
and the control group as to their PRI,
DATA t-test for independent samples was
employed where the means of the PRI
ANALYSIS of the experimental group was
compared to the means of the PRI of
the control group at 95% confidence

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
 The mean PRI of Set-up A (toddy) was 82.
3333 while set-up B (formic) has 81. 6667.
 There is no significant difference between
the plasticity retention index of natural
rubber latex coagulated with coconut
toddy vinegar and natural rubber latex
coagulated with formic acid.
 Coconut toddy vinegar can be a potential
coagulant to fresh rubber latex and is
comparable to formic acid.
 The coconut toddy vinegar is low-cost,
eco-friendly, and proven to be as effective
as commercially-available coagulants.

 To make use of the cooking facility

of rubber manufacturing or
processing plants in baking the
rubber coagulated with coconut
toddy vinegar.
