CODE OF CONDUCT
 Please BE ATTENTIVE in the class. If you are not interested in the
class-proceedings, you can leave the class-room silently.

 You are NOT allowed to use mobile phone, or any other

communication device including laptops, note-books etc. during the
class.

 There will be a ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY FOR CHEATING. Proof

of dishonesty in any aspect of the course will result in zero marks on
item in question.

 During any exam, sharing/exchange of pens or calculators are NOT

allowed.

 Please bring one reference book of the subject along with note-book,
pen and calculator in the class. If you do not want to bring these
things in the class, you will not be welcome here.

CODE OF CONDUCT
 Not writing your FULL NAME (according to CMS) on top of the solution
sheet in every exam, including assignments/quizzes would result in deduction
of 5 marks out of the obtained score.

If any student wants to participate in the discussion, or ask a question,

he/she must raise hand and speak if and after getting permission from the
instructor.

 There is no MAKEUP QUIZ. For makeup of assignment quizzes, 70% of

your obtained marks will be awarded.

 If you are late in the class by more than 5 minutes (NOT DUE TO A
GENUINE REASON), you will be allowed to attend the class, But YOU WILL
BE MARKED AS ABSENT. You will not be allowed to join the class after 15
minutes have passed.

 Missing out/incorrectly writing units will result in deduction of marks at the

instructor’s discretion.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

ME-102 Thermodynamics (Fall, 2019) Jawad Haider Syed

Introduction to Thermodynamics
 Thermodynamics is made of 2 words:

Therm – Meaning Heat

Dynamis – Meaning Motion/Transfer

It is a study of heat and work transfer between

a system and its surroundings

FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS

THERMODYNAMICS AND ENERGY
Thermodynamics can be defined as the science of energy

The name thermodynamics stems from the Greek words

therme (heat) and dynamis (power)

One of the most fundamental laws of nature is the

conservation of Energy principle.

TOTAL ENERGY OF AN INTERACTION MUST BE CONSERVED:

• If there is net input of energy in a system, the energy
storage of that system must increase
• If there is net output of energy in a system, the energy
storage of that system must decrease

Interesting Terms:
• Steady State
• Isothermal
• Adiabatic

THERMODYNAMICS AND ENERGY

Macroscopic approach to the study of

thermodynamics that does not require a
knowledge of the behavior of individual
particles is called Classical
Thermodynamics. It provides a direct and
easy way to the solution of engineering
problems.

A more elaborate approach, based on the

average behavior of large groups of
individual particles, is called Statistical
Thermodynamics.

DIMENSIONS AND UNITS
Dimension is a physical quantity: Some basic dimensions such as mass m, length L,
time t, and temperature T are selected as primary or fundamental dimensions, while
others such as velocity V, energy E, and volume V are expressed in terms of the primary
dimensions and are called secondary dimensions, or derived dimensions.

Units are developed to discretize and quantify the dimensions. Some of the units
are:
Mass – grams, kg, pound mass, ounces
Length – meters, inch, feet, mile, km
Energy – Joules, BTU, kWh
