MATTHEW 5:21–22

21“You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You

shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits
murder shall be liable to the court.’ 22 But I say to
you that everyone who is angry with his brother
shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says
to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty
before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You
fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

Murder was already a terrible sin way before the time of

Jesus. People who killed someone would be held
accountable for the crime.
Then and now, we see murder as the worst of all crimes,
so we distance ourselves from such an act.
It gives us comfort to believe that as long as we do not
kill anyone we are okay before God.
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

What are the implications if we commit murder?

 Murder is a way of destroying God’s finest creation. Us
Eph. 2:10 “For we are God’s workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do.”
Though God hated the wicked, we are not worthy to
murder His finest creation…
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

What are the implications if we commit murder?

 Murder is overlapping to God’s sovereignty.
2 Peter 3:9 “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone
to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
Though Ecclesiastes 3:3 says “There is a time to kill” that
should be done in times of war, not in relenting our
fury or satisfying our revenge.
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

What are the implications if we commit murder?

 Murder is separating the created to His Creator.
Isaiah 49:15-16 “Can a mother forget the baby at her
breast and have no compassion on the child she has
borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your wall are ever before me.”
Legit Christian have Christlike compassion.
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

What is the worst kind of murder a man can commit?

SUICIDE or Killing oneself
Psalm 31:15 David says “My times are in Your hands.”
People who commit suicide are bent on evil. People
whose hope is not focused on God
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

Check out on the following;

King Saul – Because of defeat by the enemy and great
fear after being wounded, Saul chose to end his life,
rather than face abuse by his captors. When his armor-
bearer refused to kill him at his request, he took his
own life by falling on his sword. (1 Sam. 31:3-5)
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

Check out on the following;

Abimelech – This king over Israel was ruthless and cruel.
His evil knew no limits, and after killing many people,
and even taking the lives of 69 of his 70 half-brothers,
God allowed one woman to stop him. After she dropped
a millstone on his head, he was so injured that his pride
led him to take his own life. So that no one could “say a
woman killed him.” (Judges 9:50-55)
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

Check out on the following;

Judas – In great despair and guilt after betraying Christ, the
burden Judas carried led him to choose suicide. His story is
probably the most well-known account in the Bible on the
tragedy of suicide. He was Jesus’ own disciple, he walked
with him, he was close to him, but yet he still didn’t “know”
him. And instead of repenting and seeking forgiveness after
betraying Christ, he allowed the great burden of sin to lead
him to this terrible end. (Matt. 27:3-4)
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

What does “court” speak of?

It refers to God’s judgment.
Genesis 9:6 “Whoever the blood of man by man shall his
blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made
man.”
Matthew 26:52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus
said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the
sword.
MATTHEW 5:21“You have heard that the ancients were told,
‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder
shall be liable to the court.”

What does “court” speak of?

It refers to God’s judgment.
Revelations 21:8 "But for the cowardly and unbelieving
and abominable and murderers and immoral persons
and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will
be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which
is the second death."
MATTHEW 5:22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall
be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’
shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty
enough to go into the fiery hell.”

How did Jesus redefined “murder”?

Jesus reduced the definition of murder into anger
because of its similar effects on our relationship with
Him, and our relationships with others.

What is the similarity between murder and anger?

Both separates our relationship to God and others.
Both had the same effects or consequences. Judgment
This is a serious matter because if anger is murder, then
anyone who is angry against another person is guilty
enough to go to hell (Rev. 21:8).

After Jesus taught about righteousness on being Christ-

like, he prescribed the best medicine. “Do murder or be
angry.”
Ephesians 4:26-27 “Be angry and do not sin; do not let
the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity
to the devil.”

Therefore, do not be angry or harbor grudges because…

Whatever makes us angry can be traced back to our
pride. Anger is a heart issue which can be very quiet.
We could be smiling on the outside but boiling on the
inside.
Anger leads to murder which goes down further to hell
or judgment.

What can we do then if we are being insulted?

Proverbs 11:12 Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks
sense, but a man of understanding remains silent.
REMEMBER JESUS’ WORDS
Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are you when people insult
you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against
you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is
your reward in heaven.”

If anger is a crime, then where would the crime scene be?

Anger commonly happens behind the wheels when we
drive. Road rage easily happens when we get pissed off
with others who get into our right of way.
Anger happens in our homes where we usually vent out
our fumes because there is no other place to do it, so it is
our family who gets to absorb our wrath.

If anger is a crime, then where would the crime scene be?

Anger happens in our wallet. So many people are angry
with each other because of money, wealth, or properties.
Anger is also loud in social media with no exemption
even among Christians.
Another scene of the crime is the church. The same place
where forgiveness and love are preached sadly is also
where anger takes place.

BE A LIFE-GIVER
The Bible reminds us to listen more, speak less and be
slow to get angry, for the anger of man does not achieve
the righteousness of God (James 1:19–20).
Anger is a total mismatch to the righteousness of God.
True followers of Jesus are responsible to live out the
righteousness of God daily by the power of the Holy
Spirit.

How do we become life-givers?

We can use the acronym word G.I.V.E.R to help us.
Being a giver is a way of giving life. The very same way
that He gave His Son Jesus to give us eternal life.
Let us all become GIVER of life through Christ.

How do we become life-givers?

God’s sovereignty (2 Samuel 16:5–6).
King David portrayed for us an amazing faith and
consciousness that God is always sovereign. As a king, he
had the right to retaliate against the man who cursed
Him. But he made an unbelievable reply that if it was the
Lord who told this man to do it so, then let it be
(2 Samuel 16:10).

How do we become life-givers?

God’s sovereignty (2 Samuel 16:5–6).
We learn from David that when we let go of our pride,
we can experience the peace of God. God is on His
throne no matter what.
If we continuously surrender to God’s sovereign will, we
will overcome our anger and temper issues.

How do we become life-givers?

Immediate attention (Ephesians 4:26–27).
If we believe God is sovereign, then we will give our
anger immediate attention instead of nurturing it until
our anger gets out of control.
Do not give the devil a space in our life.

How do we become life-givers?

Immediate attention (Ephesians 4:26–27).
When we cool down, our first action point is to be
reconciled with others with whom we are in conflict
(Matthew 5:23–26).
BE PART OF HIS MINISTRY! All this is from God, who
reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the
ministry of reconciliation. 1 Cor. 5:18

How do we become life-givers?

Voluntary Accountability (Proverbs 15:31).
If we believe God is sovereign, then we will volunteer to
be accountable to someone else.
We need to be part of a small group and be willing to
receive reproofs and be brave enough to give life-giving
reproofs.

How do we become life-givers?

Edifying Words (Ephesians 4:29)
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your
mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that
it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (KJV)
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men,
which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth
proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to
be. James 3:9-10

How do we become life-givers?

Edifying Words (Ephesians 4:29)
Anything can be learned and unlearned especially with
the power of the Holy Spirit. We can unlearn our critical
words and learn to speak edifying words.
Right words and right actions begin with right thinking.
Look at people from God’s perspective, with how God
views them and it will result to words that build up.

How do we become life-givers?

Reliance on the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23).
If we believe God is sovereign, we will rely on the Holy
Spirit. The deeds of the flesh are mostly variants of anger,
but the fruit of the Holy Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness
and self-control.
