KINDS OF FEATURE

STORIES

COLOUR STORY
• Describe a scene of "slice of life"
• Conveys atmosphere or "feel" of events
• Can be written to accompany a new story or as an
independent piece
HUMAN INTEREST STORY
• The focus is on person or group
• Address emotion first information second
• Can be written by focusing on dramatic event or by
focusing on a less dramatic but difficult situation
NEWS FEATURE
• The most common type of feature in newspaper
• Starts with the news and then explains reasons for
events
• Examines implications
BACKGROUNDER
• Accompanies main news story
• Clear and concise
• Gives background necessary to understand main
story
• Background breaking format
• Question-and-answer format
LIFESTYLE FEATURE
• Service story "news you can use"
• Information about life and how to live it better
• Often in magazines
• Entertaining
• 3 types (List, Issue, Idea)
• List (eg. Six nutritious vegetable to grow)
• Issue (Vegetable growing for a better diet)
• Idea (How to grow carrot)
TRAVEL STORY
• Story about travel
• Has information about travellers, inside tip, etc.
• Often relates to narrator as well as place
GENERAL FEATURE
• Topic for intrinsic interest to readers
• Often held until a suitable news event occur and
publish alngside news story
INTERVIEW PIECE
• Confined to a single interview
• Often question and answer format
• Maybe strengthened with background information
PROFILE
• Like an individual, like a mini biography but with
multiple perspectives
• Can include interview material
INVESTIGATIVE FEATURE
• In-depth study of topic
• Well researched
• Contains revelations, controversy
REVIEW
• Review of book, film, theatre, etc.
COLUMN
• Regular feature in newspaper or magazine
• Written by one author
• Includes knowledge, wit, personality
• 5 types (Service and Advice, Gossip, Pundit or
expressing opionion, Personal, Specialist)
