SYNOPSIS
•INTRODUCTION :
“SPIRITUALLY SUSTAINABLE AGRHARA”
The ancient name of AGRAHARA “CHATUREVEDIMANGALAMS”.
The name literally mean ‘A garland of house’ . To the religious
purposes , particularly to Brahmin to maintain temple in the
land, to live their family.

•AIM OF THE THESIS :


“GOING BACK TO TRADITION”. Recalling our tradition with sustainable
and minimalist organic structure. And agrahara is not only being
economical or affordable , it should be sustainable to people. No to
survive but to live.
“SURVIVING should be our HOBBY, but
LIVING should be our PASSION”.
• NEEDS AND REQUIREMENT :
Temple ,Kalyani ,Goshala ,Thotti mane ,Agriculture area with
Meditation centre ,School of Veda Upanishad etc…

•OBJECTIVES :
Where we could go back to our tradition.
Structure embedded with nature.
People gain the positive cosmic energy [Temple].
It has a Minimalist structure.
 It is Organic and Healthiest structure.
Absolute EC0- Architecture with Green building.
 Spiritual cosmic living ,working etc…

HISTORY

Agrahara means something in history of ancient India, Marathi . It


refers to villages or part of village giving to Brahmins for their
Maintenance. Where Brahmin returned for the gurukula after fini
-ng studies.
Agrahara becomes the foremost education institution in
Southern India during the medieval period. They were group settl
-ement of Brahmins who formed a crporate body and administer
-ed all affairs of the agrahara, including education.
LITERATURE REVIEW
•INTRODUCTION:

An AGRAHARA or AGRAHARAM was a grant of land and royal income from it,
typically by a king or a noble family, to religious
purposes.

The ancient name of AGRAHARA “CHATUREVEDIMANGALAMS”.


The name literally mean ‘A garland of house’ . To the religious
purposes , particularly to Brahmin to maintain temple in the land,
to live their family.
The row house sharing common wall had a long verandah running along
the front portion ,supported by stone and wooden pillars.
•THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF AGRAHARA:

PURAMTHIMA:
The long corridor/verandah running in front of the Agrahara. This
space also acted as a community gathering place where the men
assemble for religious discourse.

AKAMTHINNA:
The small room next to Puramthinna ,this room incorporates the
Konippadi leading to the upper storey.

REZHI:
This is the central room in an Agrahara which acts as the
living/bedroom ,the important religious ceremonies and rituals
associated with the Brahmin community are also performed in the
place.
KUTEERA :

• And it consist 19 pillars in the house.

JAMMATIGE:
CASE SDUDY 2.
INTRODUCTION :

•Location : Hariharapura, Karnataka


•Year of construction : 1654 AD
•Name of the place : Jammatige
•Concept of construction : Agrahara

BUILDING MATERIALS USED:

•Brick
•Lime plaster Walls
•Terracotta tiled roof
•Stone/Woos pillars
•Teak columns
•Marble and stone floors.
•Nilakanteswara Temple :

This temple was built during 1654 AD , by


Mallikarjuana and Shankaranarayana,about
two kilometers away from the Hariharpura.
kalasada kalanna, the main architect sculpt
-or behind this temple.
This temple has intricate carving on its fore
sides depicting the entire Ramayana and
Mahabharata.

The one outer wall f temple is decorated and by various stories from
Ramayana, Mahabharatha and Bhagawath. During 1989 temples shr
-ine was broken due to heavy rain. However same is Re-established
in 1990. The entrance also well decorated and Jaya and Vijayac statu
-es are here on both entrance. The temple is Example of Dravidian
Style which is really worthy see able.
