Need for measles surveillance
• Measles is a killer disease
• An effective vaccine is available
• Last vaccine for infants in EPI schedule – flags
completeness of Infant Imm.
• Coverage gaps exist within the state
• Effective surveillance provides information link
to prioritize and direct immunization
programmes

– Measles epidemiology and measles vaccine
– Strategies for measles control and measles mortality
reduction
– Principles of measles surveillance and laboratory
confirmation
– Analysis and interpretation of measles surveillance
data
• Preparedness for starting measles surveillance
according to timeline laid out by state
Objectives … (2/2)
• Acquire technical skills to
– Investigate measles outbreaks (including case
management) at Block level
– Train block and PHC level functionaries in measles
outbreak investigation (ANMs and supervisors)
– Coordinate and supervise adequate blood sample
collection and transportation with district support)
– Analyze and interpret surveillance data to direct and
prioritize UIP and measles immunization
