Introduction of database
management system
Database management is a collection of
programs which enables its users to access
database,manipulate
data,reporting/representation of data.
Database management system is a new
concept and as such had been first
implemented in 1960s.
Data

Data is a known facts and figures that have


implicit meanings.Data can also be defined as
it is the representation of facts ,concepts or
instructions in a formal manner,Which is
suitable for understanding and processing.
for example Name,Address, Height,Weight
etc.
Information

Information is a processed data on which


decisions and actions are based.Information
can be defined as the organized and classified
data to provide meaningful values.
For example “the age of Ravi is 25”.
Database

A database is a organized collection of related


data of an organisation stored in formatted
way which is shared by multiple users.
the main features of database are:
1. It must be well organized.
2. It is related.
3. It is accessible in a logical order without any
difficulty.
4. It is stored only once.
Database management system

A database management system is a collection


of related data and refers to a set of
programs for defining,creation,maintenance
and manipulation of database.
It also helps to control access to the database.
Why we use database?

In order to overcome the limitations of file


system a new approach was required.Hence a
database approach emerged.
The various reasons a database is important:
1. Manages large amount of data.
2. Accuracy.
3. Easy to update data.
4. Security of data.

The database management system can be


divided into six major components :
1. Hardware
2. Software
3. Data
4. Procedures
5. Database access language
6. Users
