DEFINATION:-
A smart quill is an intelligent pen that can remember
the word that it used to write and then transform them
into computer text.
The pen records the information inserted by user

INTRODUCTION
 Smart quill was inverted by Lindsey Williams of
Cambridge university along with British
telecommunication
 Smart quill is a pen, which remembers the words that
writes and then tranfer into computer text
 Smart quill contains sensors that records movement by
using earth’s gravity irrespective of the platform used
WORKING
 Smart quill works by measuring the pen’s movements
and matching them to the movements that produce
the words and letters programmed in to is memory
 User can enter information into these pens by simply
pressing a button and accelerometers are used to sense
the movements of the pen using earths gravity system
FEATURES
DISPLAY SCREEN
The text written can be read on a tiny screen
on the side of the pen and it has a light at its tip which
allow the user to use it even dark
HAND WRITING AND SIGNATURE
VERIFICATION
 User can train the pen to recognize particular
handwriting
 if someone else picks your Smart Quill and tries to
write with it-it wont
They are two techniques and used for this purpose

 Accelerometer Technology

 Handwriting recognition software

ACCELEROMETER TECHNOLOGY
 It is used to measuring the motion
 The pen that can be used to detect the start stop, and
loops of the hand writing transmit information
through the microcontroller and it would be make a
sense of it
1. Two axes accelerometer: Measure the accelerometer in two
axes
ex…..ADXL202 accelerometer
2. Three axes accelerometer: Measure the
accelerometer in three axes
ex…..tonics +/-2g
HAND WRITING RECOGNITION
SOFTWARE
 software embedded in the microprocessor of the pen is
used to recognize handwriting of the user.
 Two phases of handwriting recognition
Handwriting transcription
handwriting recognition
HANDWRITING TRANSCRIPTION
 In this phase the recorded acceleration signals are then
transcription to it’s original form.
METHODS:-
• Firstly, we have to know pen’s spatial orientation
Secondly, we have to succeed in the double
integration
HANDWRITING RECOGNITION
 In this phase characters and signatures are recognized
Method:-
we use simple Euclidian distance the comparison
process, and of course the decision process is the
smaller distance found
DISPLAY SCROLLS USING TILT SENSOR
 By tilting the pen user can chose applications and
scroll through without using scroll buttons

 This is done by using Micro Electro-Mechanical

systems(MEMS)tilt sensors to measure tilt angle with
earth
MEMORY
It uses 4MB EEPROM
up to 10 pages of notes can be stored locally on the pen
memory
The data is stored in the pen locally until it is copied to
the personal computer
POWER:-
Smart quill works on AAA(Antiaircraft Artillery
Battery) it can continuously work 25 hrs with a single
AAA battery
The pen has automatic on/off system
ADVANTAGES
 It can read and flat surface (not only paper)
 It is passward protected
 3D Mouse
 Power saving
 it can link to modems, printers etc……s
Disadvantages
 It has accelerometer meter
 Bigger size then a normal pen
 Errors are introduced in the system due to thermal
Variations in the spring
Applications
 Replace keyboard with Smart Quill
 Input to other devices
 Handheld computer applications
 Supports speech recognition
 Third party to add on applications
