Headlines

 Characteristics :
• Keep headlines conversational (write the way people speak)
• Use present tense, active voice
• Avoid bad splits (avoid verbs, adjectives or prepositions at the end of a line)
• Headlines should be accurate and easily understandable
• Are generally written downstyle
• Are aligned flush left
• Are usually wide rather than narrow
• Sometimes use decks

 Functions :
• Headlines summarize story contents
• Headlines prioritize stories (important stories get the biggest headlines)
• Headlines lure/attract readers into the text
• Headlines anchor story designs to help organize the layout
