PROCEDURE

 Grind pinch of soda lime and a portion

Residue B
 Transfer mixture in dry test tube
 Heat gently over small flame
 After a minute, test vapor by placing
pieces of moistened red and blue litmus
paper at tip of stirring rod.
 Note change in color of the pieces of
litmus paper
ACTUAL VS. EXPECTED RESULTS
ACTUAL RESULTS EXPECTED RESULTS
RED TO BLUE RED TO BLUE
ROLE OF REAGENTS
 Soda lime test – for amino and imino
group.
 Components: NaOH and CaO
 residue B – (Possible identity)
Sphingolipids, phosphatydylserine or
any lipid with amino group.
PRINCIPLE
 Principle involved in the test: deamination.
 Soda lime- removes the amino group from
an amino acid.
 Ammonia - the gas evolved during heating
reacts with water in the moistened litmus
paper to form ammonium hydroxide
(responsible for R to B change)
 Compound responsible for the visible
result: hydroxyl group (OH)- basic
Principle
 NH3 + H2O  NH4 + + OH-
