The Agenda
 Objective of the Project
 Separately Excited DC Motor
 Fuzzy Sets
 Fuzzy Logic
 Fuzzy Controller
 Introduction to Neural Network
 Conclusion

2
Objective of the Project
 To study the operation and characteristics
of a separately excited DC motor
 To study the basic definition of fuzzy logic
and neural network
 To design a SIMULINK model for speed
control of DC motor using fuzzy logic
controller technique

3
Separately Excited DC Motor
 The field windings are
used to excite the
field flux
 Armature current is
supplied to the rotor
via brush and
commutator for the
mechanical work
 Interaction of field flux
and armature current
in the rotor produces
torque. 4
OPERATION
 When a separately excited d.c. motor is excited by a field current
and an armature current flows in the circuit, the motor develops a
back e.m.f. and a torque to balance the load torque at a particular
speed.
 The field current is independent of armature current. Each windings
are supplied separately.
 The field current is normally much less than armature current.

5
Speed control techniques in
separately excited dc motor

 Variation of resistance in armature circuit.

 Variation of the field flux.
 Variation of the armature terminal voltage.

6
Methods of speed control
 Use of conventional PID controllers.
 Constant power field weakening controller based on load-adaptive
multi-input multi-output linearization technique (in high speed
regimes).
 A single phase uniform PWM ac-dc buck-boost converter with only
one switching device used for armature voltage control.
 Neuro fuzzy logic controller.

7
BASIC TORQUE EQUATION
 Load torque +Inertia torque +Damping torque is
equal ,T= J* dw /dt+Bw+T L

 The torque developed by the motor is:T= k i i .

a f a

 Sometimes it is written as:T =K * fi* Ia

d a

 For normal operation, the developed torque must be

equal to the load torque plus the friction and inertia i.e.
T =T
d

8
TORQUE AND SPEED CONTROL

 For a fixed field current, or flux ( If), the torque demand can be satisfied by
varying the armature current (Ia).
 The motor speed can be varied by controlling :1.Va(voltage control)
2. Vf (field control)3.Armature resistance control.
 Armature speed regulation is preferred because of high efficiency, good
transient response and speed regulation.
 In separately excited d.c. motor, flux is controlled by varying voltage across
field winding.
 In armature voltage control the maximum torque that the machine can
deliver has a constant value.
 In field control maximum torque developed by motor ha a constant value.
