INTRODUCTION
• Brain computer interface devices (BCI) detect and translate neural

activity into command sequences for computers and prosthesis.

• Electrodes recording from the brain are used to send information to

computers so that mechanical functions can be performed.

• BCI devices aim to restore function in patients suffering from loss of

motor control e.g. stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis (MS)

and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

WHAT IS BCI ?
• A brain-Computer Interface (BCIs) read electrical
signals or other manifestations of brain activity and
translate them into a digital form that computers can
understand, process, and convert into actions of some
kind, such as moving a cursor or turning on a TV.
The 3 major components of BCIs

• Ways of measuring neural signals from the human

brain.

• Methods and algorithms for decoding brain

states/intentions from these signals.

• Methodology and algorithms for mapping the

decoded brain activity to intended behavior or action.
Basic Signal-processing blocks of
BCIs
• Preprocessing

• Feature extraction

• Classification
TYPES OF BCI
• Invasive BCI’s
These are implanted directly into the grey
matter of the brain by neurosurgery.
• Partially Invasive
It is another brain signal reading process
which is applied to the inside the skull but
outside the grey matter.
• Non-Invasive
It is the most useful neuron signal imaging
method which is applied to the outside of the
skull, just applied on the scalp.
BCI Disciplines
• Nanotechnology
• Biotechnology
• Information technology
• Cognitive science
• Computer science
• Biomedical engineering
• Neuroscience
• Applied mathematics
BCI Based Biometric System
Applications of BCI
• Provide disabled people with communication, environment control,
and movement restoration.

• Provide enhanced control of devices such as wheel chairs, vehicles, or

assistance robots for people with disabilities.

• Provide additional channel of control in computer games.

• Monitor attention in long-distance drivers or aircraft pilots, send out

alert and warning for aircraft pilots.

• Control robots that function in dangerous or inhospitable situations

(e.g., underwater or in extreme heat or cold).

• Create a feedback loop to enhance the benefits of certain therapeutic

methods.
Brain Gate: The sensor, which is implanted into the brain,
monitors brain activity in the patient and converts the intention
of the user into computer commands.
Honda Asimo Control: Researches have developed an interface
for Honda’s Asimo robot that allows individuals to control it simply by
thinking.
Gaming Control: Gaming control a wearable and wireless EEG-based
brain-computer interface device with novel dry foam based sensors.
Bionic Eye: A visual prosthesis, often referred to as a bionic eye, is an
experimental visual device intended to restore functional vision in those
suffering from partial or total blindness.
Pros and Cons
• Allow paralyzed people to • Research is still in beginning
control prosthetic limbs with stages
their mind
• The current technology is
• Transmit visual images to the
crude
mind of a blind person ,
allowing them to see • Ethical issues may prevent its

• Allow gamers to control video development

games with their minds • Electrodes outside of the skull

• Allow a mute person to have can detect very few electric
their thoughts displayed by a signals from the brain
computer
Current and future trends in BCI
• Unimodal to multimodal- that is, simultaneous monitoring of
brain activity using several devices and combining BCI with
multimodal HCIs;

• Simple signal processing tools to more advanced machine

learning and multidimensional data mining.

• Synchronous binary decision to multi degree control and

asynchronous cells based control.

• Open loop to closed loop control neuro-feedback combined

with multimodal HCI
Conclusion
• BCI research has tremendous implications to the field
of medicine

• Lots of ongoing active research driven the enormous

interest

• Consumer electronics companies such as emotive and

neurosky are coming up with user friendly headsets

• New areas of application outside of medicine,

gaming, control, education
