objectives
1. What is a colloid?
2. What are the types?
3. What are the technical
applications of colloids?
What is a colloid??
• A colloid is a substance microscopically
dispersed throughout another substance

• The word colloid comes from a greek word

(kolla) which means glue thus colloidal
particles are glue like substance
• The size of colloids in electron microscope
view
• Colloid particles maybe so small that
dispersion appears uniform even under
microscope, but they are large enough to
scatter light effectively

• The scattering of the light by colloidal particles

is known as the tyndall effect
• The colloidal particles make up of
A. Dispersed phase (solute)
B. Dispersing medium (solvent)

• Colloids can be solids, liquid , or gases

Types of colloids
• Aerosol: is a type of colloid described as
dispersion of solid or liquid in gas
• Ex: fog, smoke, dust
• Emulsion: is the dispersion of one type of
liquid in another type of liquid
• Ex: butter and mayonnaise
• Sol: solid particles are dispersed in a liquid
• Ex: blood and paint
• Gels: when a colloidal solution appear as solid
• Ex: jelly and cheese
• Foams: colloidal dispersion of gas bubbles in
liquid or solid foams
• Ex: whipped cream and plaster
Technical applications of colloids
• Electrical precipitation of smoke
• Industrial products like:
• Cement
• Plastics
• Ink
• Photosensitive colloidal silver bromide is
coated over colloidal films
