Machine Parts
•Why do you need to know the machine
parts and their functions?
• You’ll be a successful operator of the machine.
• You can solve your own problems when you have
difficulty (that’s called troubleshooting).
• It gives you and I a common ground for
communicating about problems you have with the
machine or adjustments you need to make on it to
accomplish a task.
• You will have more fun sewing if YOU ARE THE
BOSS!!!!!
1)Stitch Length Control: Regulates
stitch length, keep on 2 – 2.5 to sew a
regulation seam, 10 – 12 stitches per
inch.
2)Zig Zag Width Control: Controls
width of a zig zag stitch. Set on 0 to
sew a straight stitch.
3) Bobbin Winder Spindle: Winds
bobbin.
4) Spool Pin and Cover: Holds the spool
of thread, DO NOT misplace the cover!
5) Thread Tension Control: Regulates
tension on the top thread.
6) Presser Foot Pressure Dial: Controls the amount
of pressure on the presser foot – DON’T CHANGE
IT!

7) Buttonhole Lever: Needed when sewing a

buttonhole, keep up when not needed.
8) Thread Cutter: Use to quickly cut your
thread after sewing a seam

9) Feed Dogs: Move the fabric through

the machine, it will not work unless the
presser foot is down.
10. Needle Plate: Covers the feed dogs,
the lines on this help you sew a straight
line of the correct width. A regulation
seam is 5/8” wide.
11. Hook Cover (Bobbin Holder): Holds
the bottom thread (bobbin)
• 12. Reverse Stitch Button: To sew in
reverse in order to secure a line of
stitching. Important to reverse at
beginning and end of seams.

• 13. Thread Take Up Lever: Raises thread to

take a stitch, then loosens to make a knot.
Be sure thread is in this, if it comes out, the
machine will make a terrible noise!
14. Handwheel: Moves needle by hand, used to
bring bobbin thread up. Always move toward you.

15. Clutch Knob: Disengages the clutch so the

needle doesn’t move up and down when you wind
the bobbin.
•16. Pattern Selector Dial:
Selects the stitch
•17. Power Switch and Light:
Turns on machine and light.
18. Needle Clamp Screw: Holds needle tightly in
machine. When replacing needle, make sure flat
side goes to the back. Tighten needle.

19. Presser Foot: Holds fabric onto feed dogs, if

you forget to put this down, machine will make a
horrible noise. DO NOT SNAP IT DOWN
•20. Presser Foot Lifter: Raises and
lowers presser foot. DO NOT SNAP IT,
lower it gently!
