DEFINITION OF TERMS

to humans
- can have a range of 20-20,000 hertz to
produce acoustic sound
• Digital Audio – any audio that can be used to record,
store, generate, manipulate and produce sounds using
digitally converted audio signals.
• Hertz – unit for sound frequency
• Analog/ Analogue Signal –is any continuous signal that
represents time-varying quantities.
• Think of electrical voltage that changes overtime

- Reproduction of a digital music recording whether it is
reproduced from another digital recording or indirectly from a
transmission
DIGITAL AUDIO RECORDING DEVICE
- Any machine or device used to record digital recordings intended
for private use. Recordings except professional model products
and dictation/ answering machines.
DIGITAL AUDIO INTERFACE DEVICE
- Any device or machine used to communicate digital audio
information.

- Any machine or device mostly used by consumers
in the marketing side for the purpose of making

- These are fixed; they can be evaluated,
reproduced and communicated with the help of a
machine or device.

• Loseless Compression – compressed audio; still has data and still
keeps the audio’s quality
• Lossy Compression – compressed audio; loss of data; smaller in
file size; is popular online and can be downloaded easier from the
internet.

• MP3 (.mp3) – name of the type of file for MPEG, audio
layer 3
- Layer 3 – removes all unnecessary
information(more specifically irrelevant and redundant
parts of a sound signal)
• WMA (.wma) – Windows Media Audio
- a Microsoft file format for encoding digital
audio files similar to MP3; can be of any size compressed
to match many different connection speeds or bandwidths.

• WAV (.wav) – used for storing sound in files developed
jointly by Microsoft and IBM.

• MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) – a standard
adopted by the electronic music industry; represents the
sound’s note pitch, length and volume.
