Knowledge Processing
Learning is :
a. associated with changes in mental representations that can
manifest themselves in behavioral changes
b. an interaction with the environment and is initiated to adapt
personal needs to the external world
The multi-store model of human information processing
Peta Pikir – Mind Map

Developed by Tony Buzan around1970s

“organize facts and thoughts” in a map format containing a “central image, main themes
radiating from the central image, branches with key images and key words, plus branches
forming a connected nodal structure”
Advantages of applying mind mapping technique
 Preparing notes from textbooks.
 The Buzan mind map principles are easy and interesting to follow
 It is economical.
 Buzan mind maps involve the use of both left and right brain.
 It is among the easiest and most famous thinking tool.
 Students are able to memorize better

 Brainstorming - individually, and as a group.

 Summarizing information, and note-taking.
 Consolidating information from different research so
urces.
 Thinking through complex problems.
 Presenting information in a format that shows the
overall structure of your subject.
 Studying, retaining and recall information.
 Promotes meaningful learning instead of memorizati
on.
Disadvantages of applying mind mapping technique

 Cannot be digitally stored other than as a scanned document.

 Map size is limited.
 Preference of user for mind mapping software advantages

Peta Konsep – Concept Map
Novak and Gowin (1984),a concept map is "a schematic device for
representing a set of concept meanings in a framework of propositions”

Concept maps means that one is making an intentional effort to link,

differentiate and relate concepts to each other in a hierarchical
fashion

medical students :
a. being able to integrate and connect various pieces of information
that pertain to a clinical case (developing understanding)
b. the student needs to decide the best course to take based on
that information (taking action)
The Key Characteristics of a Concept Map

Nodes
Nodes are the circles or the boxes that are used to represent a concept or an
idea. These may vary in size, according to their hierarchy on the map; for exam
ple, more general nodes at the top of the map may be bigger than the more
specific nodes that follow them.

Cross-Links
Concept maps consist of concepts in different domains. And the relation
ships between these different domains of knowledge are
shown with cross-links.

Linking Words
Or linking phrases if it contains more than a word. These describe the type
of relationship between the two concepts and appear on the line
connecting them
The Key Characteristics of a Concept Map

Hierarchical Structure
Usually, concept maps are organized hierarchically. This means
the most general and inclusive concepts are placed at the top of
the map. Those that are more specific are positioned below them.
Accordingly, hierarchical concept maps are read from top to bottom.

Propositional Structure
A concept map illustrates a set of meaningful propositions about a
topic.
Every two concepts (in some cases more than two,) along with the
linking phrases, form a meaningful sentence, otherwise known as
a proposition.
How to Draw a Concept Map
Step 1: Pick a Topic

Step 2: Do a Quick Brainstorm

What are the facts, ideas, concepts, themes, queries etc. that come to
your mind when you think about this topic?
Step 3: Start to Draw the Map
Start a concept map from the top and develop it downward
Step 4: Connect the Concepts
The more important the idea, the closer it should be to the top

Step 5: Anything Missing?

The main advantage of concept mapping

a. its relational aim

b. meaningful learning best takes place

A major disadvantage of concept mapping :

it is limited to relations between concepts
