Advocating for Technology

in the Classroom
Ilia Willison
Educ 540: Essentials in Learning and Technology
Azusa Pacific University
Fall II, 2018
Introduction
Technology is becoming increasingly present
within the classroom with accessibility to
IPads, Chromebooks, and other educational
technology becoming the norm.

Awareness, education, application, and

advocation in schools will help students to
succeed in the real world and is essential to
easily providing an equitable education.

(PBS, 2013)
Statement #1: Technology is an important tool for
differentiation and the Universal Design For Learning.
❏ Technology can be used to reach different learners
at different academic levels or of diverse learning
styles by providing several options for
assessments, activities, etc. (Stern, 2015).
❏ UDL is all about engagement, representation, and
expression which technology can easily address
through activities, games, and self-driven learning
(About Universal Design for Learning, 2018).

- Technology tends to automatically engage children

-Allows them to take learning into their own hands

- Can be used for students to find ways of expressing

themselves through music, art, writing, etc.

(PBS, 2011)
Statement #2: Technology is easily integrated through
the SAMR and TPACK model.
SAMR
+ Cuts down on clutter!
● Substitution: switch it out for old paper-based activities or projects
● Augmentation: use it for daily activities (Puentedora, n.d.) + Makes daily classroom life
● Modification: redesign new parts of a task smooth.
● Redefinition: influence higher-order thinking by making all-new
tasks (Educatorstechnology, 2013) + Teacher can easily track
progress.
T P
TPACK + Allows students to take
● Technical Knowledge control of their learning.
● Pedagogical Knowledge C
● Content Knowledge + Challenges students.
● All 3 combine to implement technology into the classroom
+ Provides real world
effectively, keeping in mind the technology, pedagogy, and content
examples and skills.
when designing instruction (Education, 2016).
Statement #3: Educators should be advocates for
learning through technology.
How do you become an advocate?
- Implement technology in your own life and then the classroom
- Model and support technology in your school
- Research options for specific programs and subscriptions for school-wide use
- Teach other teachers and students how to use new technology (Gupta, 2016).
How do you use it?
Examples include virtual field trips, classroom management, present video mini-
lessons, communication with parents, create virtual manipulatives, research
projects, stations, and the list goes on (Guido, 2018).

Personal Learning/Teaching Goals
1. I will be continually learn alongside my students
about technology and the content that I teach.
2. I will implement technology in my future
classroom on a daily basis, using it to supplement
instruction and differentiate amongst learners.
3. I will be able to provide students the opportunity
to take control of their own education and inspire
them to continue further into trade school,
college, or university.
(Hulton Archive, 1915) “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s,
we rob them of tomorrow.” -John Dewey (1994, p. 167)
Conclusion
Technology can be easily
integrated with the proper tools,
knowledge, and purpose.

Being aware of how it can

positively move the classroom
forward through engagement
and real-world experiences is the
beginning to advocating for
technology for everyday use in
the classroom.
