NETWORK CABLES

WHAT IS NETWORK CABLE?

 Networking cables are networking hardware used to connect one

network device to other network devices or to connect two or more
computers to share printers, scanners etc. Different types of network
cables, such as coaxial cable, optical fiber cable, and twisted pair cables,
are used depending on the network's physical layer, topology, and size.
The devices can be separated by a few meters or nearly unlimited
distances
ETHERNET CABLES

 A type of cable that consists of two independently insulated

wires twisted around one another.
 The use of two wires twisted together helps to reduce
crosstalk and electromagnetic induction.
 Twisted pair looks like telephone wire and consists of insulated
strands of copper wire twisted together.
TWISTED PAIR
 There are two versions of twisted pair cable:
 Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
 STP is commonly used in Token Ring networks and UTP in Ethernet networks
where it is referred to as “10baseT.”
 Transmission rates vary between 10-100 Mbps.
UTP CABLE
UTP
 Short for unshielded twisted pair, a popular type of cable that consists
of two unshielded wires twisted around each other.
 Due to its low cost, UTP cabling is used extensively for local – area
networks (LANs) and telephone connections.
 UTP cabling does not offer as high bandwidth or as good protection
from interference as coaxial or fiber optical cables.
 But it is less expensive and easier to work with.
UTP (UNSHIELDED TWISTED PAIR ) CABLE
STP
 STP short for shielded twisted pair, a type of copper telephone wiring in
which each of the two copper wires that are twisted together are
coated with an insulating coating that functions as ground for the wires.
 The extra covering in shielded twisted pair wiring protects the
transmission line from electromagnetic interference leaking into or out
of the cable.
 STP cabling often is used in Ethernet networks, especially fast data rate
Ethernets.
WHAT ARE THE KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF
UTP?
 Transmission rate of 10 – 100 Mbps
 Maximum cable segment of 100 meters
 Most susceptible to electrical interference or crosstalk (although shielding may lessen
the impact)
 Less expensive than coax or fiber-optic. In some cases, preinstalled telephone wire
may be used in the network.
 Very flexible and easy to work with
 Uses an RJ-45 connector
 Ethernet designation is 10baseT
WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF
SHIELDED TWISTED PAIR (STP)?

 Shielded twisted pair (STP) is similar to UTP except it

contains a copper braid jacket to ‘shield’ the wires from
electrical interference. It can support transmission over
greater distances than UTP.

THE UTP CATEGORIES
CAT 1 1Mhz DATA RATE UP TO 1Mbps / carry - Traditional Telephone & ISDN –
only voice Modem
CAT 2 4Mhz DATA RATE UP TO 4 Mbps - Token Ring
CAT 3 16Mhz DATA RATE UP TO 10Mbps - Token Ring & 10base-t
CAT 4 20Mhz DATA RATE UP TO 16Mbps - Token Ring
CAT 5 100Mhz DATA RATE UP TO 100Mbps - Ethernet (10Mbps)
FAST ETHERNET (100Mbps) and Token ring (16Mbps)
CAT 5E 100Mhz DATA RATE UP TO 1000Mbps - Gigabyte Ethernet
CAT 6 250Mhz DATA RATE UP TO 1000Mbps - Gigabyte Ethernet
CAT 7 600Mhz DATA RATE UP TO 1Gbps - Gigabyte Ethernet
UTP CATEGORIES

 CAT 1 is typically telephone wire. This type of wire is not capable of

supporting computer network traffic and is not twisted.
 It is also used by phone companies who provide ISDN, where the wiring between
the customer’s site and the phone company’s network uses CAT 1 Cable.
 CAT2, CAT3, CAT4, CAT5, CAT6 and CAT7 are network wire
specifications. This type of wire can support computer network and
telephone traffic.
THE TWIST EFFECT

 The “twist” effect of each pair in the cables will cause any
interference presented/picked up on one cable to be cancelled
out by the cable’s partner which twists around the initials cable.
CAT3 and CAT4 are both used for Token Ring and have a
maximum length of 100 meters.

TYPES OF ETHERNET CABLE
 Straight Through Ethernet Cable
 Used in Local Area Network (LAN) to connect PC to a network devices.
 Connect a different devices

 Cross-Over Ethernet Cable

 Used in Local Area Network (LAN) to connect network devices directly, without
the need for a router in the middle.
 Connect a same devices

RJ – 45 CONNECTOR

 Registered Jack 45 (RJ45) is a standard type of physical

connector for network cables. RJ45 connectors are most
commonly seen with Ethernet cables and networks. Modern
Ethernet cables feature small plastic plugs on each end that are
inserted into the RJ45 jacks of Ethernet devices
CABLE CONNECTORS

 UTP uses connection called the RJ-45 connector.

 It looks similar to a common telephone connector (RJ-
11) except it is slightly larger.
 The RJ-45 has 8 pins while the RJ-11 has only 4.

TELEPHONE CABLE

 Dial-up Internet access is a form of Internet access that

uses the facilities of the public switched telephone
network to establish a connection to an Internet service
provider (ISP) by dialing a telephone number on a
conventional telephone line.
 Telephone wire with 2 pair twisted solid wire
RJ - 11

 RJ-11. RJ-11. (Registered Jack-11) A telephone interface that

uses a cable of twisted wire pairs and a modular jack with two,
four or six contacts. RJ-11 is the common connector for
plugging a telephone into the wall and the handset into the
telephone. See modular connector.

COAXIAL CABLE
 A Coaxial cable is a cable used in the transmission of video,
communications, and audio. This cable has high bandwidths and greater
transmission capacity. Most users relate to a coaxial or coax cable as a
cable used to connect their TVs to a cable TV service. However, these
cables are also used in networks and what allow a broadband cable
Internet connection using a cable modem. The picture is an example of a
coaxial cable. As can be seen in this picture, the cable is a thick cable with
a metal male connector end that is screwed onto a female connector.
COAXIAL AND SPLITTER CONNECTOR

 Coaxial cable connectors are used to connect cables to other devices

and are specifically designed to maintain the shielding on the cable. ...
Male connectors have a protruding metal pin in the center, whereas
female connectors have a receptacle to receive that pin.
 A splitter is a device used to split the cable signal if the signal must be
sent to two or more devices. Technicians might install splitters to
activate additional outlets within your home.

FIBER OPTIC OR OPTICAL FIBER CABLE

 Fiber optic Internet is an Internet connection that transfers data fully or

partially via fiber optic cables.“Fiber” refers to
 the thin glass wires inside the larger protective cable. “Optic” refers to
the way the type of data transferred – light signals.
FIBER CONNECTOR

 An optical fiber connector terminates the end of an optical fiber, and

enables quicker connection and disconnection than splicing. The
connectors mechanically couple and align the cores of fibers so light can
pass. Better connectors lose very little light due to reflection or
misalignment of the fibers. In all, about 100 different types of fiber optic
connectors have been introduced to the market.

ROLLOVER CABLE

 Rollover cable (also known as a Yost cable, Cisco cable, or a

Console cable) is a type of null-modem cable that is often used
to connect a computer terminal to a router's console port. This
cable is typically flat (and has a light blue color) to help
distinguish it from other types of network cabling.
