INTRODUCTION TO SOLWIN
 A SOLWIN is an automobile that has two major
renewable sources of energy.

 Most hybrid vehicles currently marketed to

consumers have both conventional gasoline and
electric motors.
 “SOL” indicates SOLAR energy that we get
from the radiations coming from the sun. It is
available in abundance and is the Primary
source of energy for our car.

 “WIN” indicates WIND energy that is the

secondary energy source which utilize the
Kinetic Energy of moving vehicle.
 The first car was built in Mannheim, Germany by
Karl Benz back there in 1885.
 It took whole 70 years, just from the first motor car
to the first solar car.
 It was on August 31, 1955 -William G. Cobb of the
General Motors (GM) Corporation demonstrated
his 38 cm (15 inch) long model called Sunmobile.
 Despite the fact that it was too small for anyone to
drive, the Sunmobile was recognised as the first
solar powered car in the world.
 It had 12 photovoltaic solar cells installed onto the
Sunmobile. Those solar cells were connected in
series-parallel generating the electricity that in turn
powered small motor.
 The motor ran on 1.5 volts, turning the driveshaft
and transferring the energy to wheels to move the
car forward.
 The first full-sized solar car was shown to the public
in 1962. It was 50-years old Baker electric car
modified by the International Rectifier Corporation
to run on solar energy using photovoltaic solar
panels installed on the roof of the vehicle.
 The solar panel contained around 10,640 individual
solar cells. That model could reach only small
distances despite the battery back-up system.
 Fifteen years later, in 1977, the Bluebird solar car
was built by Alabama University professor Edward
Passerini. It was a prototype of full scale vehicle
and it was supposed to be powered by the
photovoltaic solar panels only, without the back-up
battery set.
 But it was never mass produced.
 In early 2009, according to some reports, Toyota
Motor Corp. was secretly developing a totally solar
vehicle but due to the crisis and financial problems
Toyota’s planned solar car is not expected to
come to the market soon.
 Today, more than a half century after Cobb’s
Sunmobile, a mass-production of solar car hasn’t
yet started.
 Some are flirting with the new car generation by
installing solar cells on the vehicle to generate a
part of required energy so at least air conditioning,
communication devices and other similar car
electronics could be powered by solar energy and
thus giving the good foundation for a new solar car
researches.Ex-Toyota Prius
 And others are Using it as for making Hybrid (SOLAR
& GASOLINE) vehicles.
 SERVe solar mobil designed by students of Manipal
University can run at a maximum speed of 50kmph
and At most 150km.
 DTU students also designed and exhibited a solar
driven car in 2012 known as SOLARIS.
 Continous R&D is going in DTU from past few years
in this field.
 Wind cars are not so widely produced and used as
it is not so effective solely.
 InVentus Ventomobile, the first wind-powered car
was designed by students of University of Stuttgart
in August 2008
 It is a three-wheel which had two-bladed rotor on
top with a diameter of two meters, with its 130 kg of
weight
 Technically, it is the first wind powered car in the
world, since a wind turbine is actually located on
the vehicle itself.
The InVentus
Ventomobile
racing at the
Aeolus Race 2008.
 As solar car have problem of charging during
running, because efficiency of solar plate
decrease in running state, so we thought to add
an additional source for charging the battery.
 We used Wind as the secondary source for
charging battery, a wind turbine is needed to be
employed somewhere in the body of the vehicle
which can convert kinetic energy of the vehicle to
get stored as electric energy in the battery.
 Also a solar car do not have speed as of
conventional cars so we thought to use four motors
in its four wheels, which provide sufficient RPM.
 The solar car also do not bear sufficient load so we
thought to use brushless DC gear reduction motors
which initially can provide high torque.
 We also thought to decrease the problem of
turning or parking a car, where there is no
adequate space, so we used AWTV system, with
the help of which we can achieve 360 degree
rotation at the same place.
 Placing a turbine at a car also removes its
aesthetic look, so we thought to design the car
such that it neither contradicts its aerodynamic
shape nor its aesthetic looks.
 Instead of using a vertical turbine, a horizontal
turbine is to be used either at its front or rear
portion.

• Efficiency 90-95%. • Efficiency 75-85%.

• Space Efficient. • More space required.
• Costlier. • Less costly
• Pure Silicon. • Lower purity silicon
• Highest power
output.
 It collects the energy
from the sun and
converts it into usable
electrical energy.
 An array is made of a
number of Modules which
are further made of a
number of Solar cells.
 So, we can say that a Solar
cell is a smallest part of an
Array.

 A wind turbine converts wind power into electric energy,
thereby helping in quick charging of batteries while
running

 There’s an intake valve seated on the hood to grab all the

wind needed to power the car.

 An Alternator is connected to the turbine with

suitable arrangement which converts the kinetic energy of
rotating turbine to electrical energy.

 This electrical energy is connected to a DC battery pack

which is the source of power to a controller.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
 When the car is moving , to get the most out of it
we have to use a turbine with a large contact
surface with the streamlined shape of Car’s body.
Such turbine will have only one active side.
It would be better to bend the airstream
onto the active area like this:

This increases the efficiency of the wind turbine.

 We’ve Used Horizontal Wind Turbine In Our
Vehicle,That Not Only
Justifies With Its Aerodynamics, But It also
Provides additional Power Generation that
Moves An Alternator Which later On Charges
The Battery.

 The Turbine Blades Are Given A Blade Angle of 8

Degree,That Cut’s Out Maximum Air, And
Generates More Power.

 Instead Of Transmission System, We Have Used

DC gear Reduction Motors In It,That Provides
Torque Upto 0.75 N-m@200 RPMx
 Also by Using These Motors,We’ll Get A Gear
Reduction Ratio In Order Of 5:1 which will help in
getting high torque during starting of vehicle from
rest. .

 Duct’s And Scoops Are Also Used To Reduce Air

Drag(Resistence).
1.Regenerative Breaking System:-
A regenerative brake is an energy
recovery mechanism which slows a vehicle or
object by converting its kinetic energy into a form
which can be either used immediately or stored
until needed. This contrasts with conventional
braking systems, where the excess kinetic energy
is converted to unwanted and wasted heat by
friction in the brakes. In addition to improving the
overall efficiency of the vehicle, regeneration
can greatly extend the life of the braking system
as its parts do not wear as quickly.
 The most common form of regenerative
brake involves an electric motor as an
electric generator.
 In electric railways the electricity so
generated is fed back into the supply
system.
 In battery electric and hybrid
electric vehicles, the energy is stored
chemically in a battery.
DRAWBACKS:
1.Unpredictablity

 Solar energy is unpredictable , it depends on

weather and geographical conditions.

 The availability of wind energy is not constant.

 We can hope for breakthroughs in energy storage

technologies in the future, but right now, wind
turbines have to be used in tandem with other
energy sources to meet our energy demands of
our vehicle.
2. Cost
 The cost-competitiveness of wind
power and Costly Solar arrays is highly
debatable.

 This is to give solar electric vehicles a

fierce competition against already
well-established energy sources such as
fossil fuels and gasoline.
3. Noise
 Noise can be a problem for car’s inner
passengers.
 So, careful design of wind turbine is essential.

4. Aesthetic Looks
 While most people actually like how wind turbines
look, there is always some problems with using it in
a traditional car designs as we are not comfortable
with such designs.
 It is not very widely acceptable to customers.
