DEVELOPMENT OF
CHESS
THE HISTORY OF CHESS
 The history of chess can be traced back nearly 1500
years, although the earliest origins are uncertain.

 The earliest predecessor of the game probably


originated in India during the Gupta Empire, before the
6th century AD; the game was known as Chaturanga
then which refers to four divisions of army such as the
Elephants, cavalry, infantry and chariots.

 The game was played as chatrang , which subsequently


evolved to shantraj in Sassanid Persia when the Arabs
conquered the country around 600 AD.
 The game then quickly become popular in Western
Europe and Russia by the 9th century.

 In 1000 AD, the game spread throughout Europe. The


rules of the game were modified a little in Southern
Europe in 1200. again a major changes were made in
the year 1475.

 The chess soon moved from Europe to France in 18th


century, and also played in coffee houses in European
cities like Paris.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHESS
 In Persia, around 600 AD the players started calling “Shãh!”
(Pesian for “king”) when attacking the opponent’s king and
“Shãh Mãt!”(Persian for the “king is helpless” – see
checkmate).

 The first world chess tournament was held in London 1851,


Adolf Andressen of Germany won that tournament.

 In 1886, Johannes Zukertort from Germany became the first


official World Chess Champion. Emmanuel Lasker defeated
him and held the title for 27 years

 The World Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded in 1924 in


Paris.
 In 1827 the first woman world champion was Vera
Menchik of England.
 The Soviets established their dominance in the sport after
1948 starting with Mikhail Botvinnik.

 FIDE become the official organization for chess andit


soon arranged chess tournaments for proffesional
players.

 During the last 20 years, scientists had been developing


chess playing computers that can compete with human
players
 Deep Blue is a super computer capable of making
millions of calculations a second for every move.

 Garry Kasparov, a world chess champion was defeated


in 1996 by a super computer. Wilhelm Steinitz a first world
champion of chess

 Chess remain a high popular pastime to this day. In 2012


a survey found that “chess players now make up one of
the largest communities in the world: “605 million adult
play chess regularly”

 Chess is played at least once a year by 12% of Brittish


people, 15% of American, 23% of Germans, 43% of
