INTRODUCTION
 Hoover dam(boulder dam) is a concrete
arch gravity dam on black canyon
 Multipurpose dam - irrigation and power
generation
 First site – Boulder canyon – found
geological faults
Arch gravity dam
 Itis a dam that curves upstream in a
narrowing curve that directs most of the
water against the canyon rock walls,
providing the force to compress the dam
Construction
 River diversion - Before the dam could be
built, the Colorado River needed to be
diverted away from the construction site.
 Four diversion tunnels were driven through
the canyon walls, two on the Nevada side
and two on the Arizona side.
Groundwork, rock clearance
 Making of dykes - stop the river flow
 Removal of loose top soil and soil caused
due erosion until bedrock is reached
 Soil should be impermeable – not to
disturb foundation
 The cleared, underlying rock foundation
of the dam site was reinforced with grout,
called a grout curtain.
Concrete
 Pouring of concrete - the ground where
the dam was to rise was marked with
rectangles, and concrete blocks in
columns were poured
 Curing - steel pipes through which first
cool river water, then ice-cold water from
a refrigeration plant was run
Spillways
 The dam is protected against over-
topping by two spillways. The spillway
entrances are located behind each
dam abutment , running roughly parallel
to the canyon walls.
 Reinforcement is provided only to the
spillway part.
Folds
 Anticline –
 The earth surface that
has extruded out
Due to the internal
Pressure inside the earth
Folds (contd..)
 Syncline –
 The earth surface that is
Relatively below due to the formation of
anticline …
Geology of site
 Anticline–more preferred than syncline
 Syncline acts as a reservoir .

 Stable slope
 Hoover dam
Is constructed
On plain surface
Syncline
