Abstract

Demand for automation and security is increasing day by

day due to change in social structure from combined to
nuclear family. This paper presents a low cost, highly
flexible and easy to use automation and security system.
By using GSM module along with microcontroller, home
appliances can be controlled from anywhere outside.
RFID, GSM and Bluetooth are the communication devices
which can be controlled by our smartphone.

Introduction

Home automation and security is highly needed in

the society. The reason is that the old security
systems are not useful and can be easily broken.
Now the security system has reached to next level. In
this system a number of sensors and modules are
interconnected to each other to obtain the desired
goals. Most of the devices in the house are remotely
controlled in present time but there are problems
associated with them.

RFID

Radio-frequency identification is used to automatically

identify and track tags and perform the task according
to a predefined program. Electronically-stored
information is contained by the tag which is used to
match the card being used by the owner. This is used
to detect the owner of house and open the lock of the
main entrance. This avoids the normal locks which can
be braked or opened.

Passive infrared sensor

PIR stands for the passive infrared sensor. It is a

sensor which senses the infrared radiation emitted
from objects in its detecting area. PIR sensor has two
slots; each slot is made of IR sensitive material.
When a warm body like human or animal passes by,
it first intercepts one half of sensor which causes
positive change.

Bluetooth module

Bluetooth Module is used to communicate with

the android phone in master slave configuration.
This provides link between the mobile phone and
arduino. We can send commands to the arduino
to perform certain tasks using this device.

GSM Module

GSM is a mobile communication modem; it is stands for

global system for mobile communication (GSM). It is
widely used mobile communication system in the world.
GSM is an open and digital cellular technology used for
transmitting mobile voice and data services operates at
the 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz
frequency bands.

Relay

Relays are electromechanical or electronic

switches used to open or close the circuits. Relays
control the connections of an electrical circuit by
opening or closing contacts in another part of
circuit electronically. Theses are used to control
large current with the help of small voltage.

Arduino UNO

The Arduino Uno is a microcontroller (ATmega328P)

based development board by Arduino.cc. The board
contains 14 digital input/output pins, 6 Analog inputs and
a 16 MHz crystal oscillator that can be connected to
various expansion boards (shields) and other circuits. The
board features 14 Digital pins and 6 Analog pins.

Functioning
In this system the main entrance is locked using the RFID
reader and it opens the lock only if it detects the same card
as mentioned in program. If intruder enters from any other
side then 1st PIR sensor detects the intrusion and gives signal
to arduino, 2nd PIR is connected slightly away from the 1st
PIR senosor, if it also detects the intruder and gives signal to
the arduino then arduino send SMS to the house owner using
GSM module that intrusion has happened and it also activates
the alarm connected to the arduino to acknowledge the
neighbors about intrusion. After this owner gives some
command vis SMS to either on or off the alarm.

Conclusion
Home automation and security system is developed using RFID,
PIR sensor, GSM module and Bluetooth. RFID and PIR sensor
provides the security of the house as per requirement and GSM
module provides the information about intrusion and also
receives the command from the owner to perform some specific
task. This system works well and provides results as required for
home automation and security. This system can be connected to
web camera and LCD display for alerting the person. Other
sensors like LPG sensor, fire sensor and temp sensor can also be
connected to make it more versatile. By connecting Bluetooth
module we can operate the home appliances without mobile
network with the help of mobile Bluetooth.
