 PASTICHE
•Pastiche is a creative work that
imitates another author or genre. It’s
a way of paying respect, or honor, to
great works of the past.
II. IMPORTANCE OF PASTICHE
•The main purpose of using pastiche is
to celebrate great works of the past,
or genres that a given show, movie, or
story does not actually belong to.
EXAMPLE:

• E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Gray is a

pastiche that imagines two characters from
the famous Twilight series, Bella and Edward,
in new roles.
III. RELATED TERMS:

• Parody - As we’ve seen, parody is a variation

on pastiche. In a parody, all the elements of
pastiche are there, but there’s also a
mocking tone.
III. RELATED TERMS:
•Plagiarism - Pastiche isn’t just stealing. The
author of pastiche always expects that the
audience will know the works being
imitated and appreciate that they’re seeing
an imitation.
III. RELATED TERMS:

• Fan Fiction - Fan fiction is a little like

pastiche – it’s taking the stories, characters,
or fictional worlds created by another
author and somehow adding to them.
 PLAYFULNESS
•Playing around with words, feelings,
and thoughts to create a positive
impact on any design process.
EXAMPLE:

• The Crying of Lot 49, for example, contains

characters named Mike Fallopian and Stanley
Koteks and a radio station called KCUF,
while the novel as a whole has a serious
subject and a complex structure.
