Health Education Project

Pedestrian and Bike Safety Education at Maldonado

● November 14th, 2019 at Maldonado Elementary School library


● 8:00 am - 10:00 am
● 37 fourth-grade students
● Used posterboard, props, demonstrations, and games to teach
students about safety
● Areas focused on:
○ Crossing the road and sidewalk use
○ Helmet use
○ Use of hand signals
○ Bike lights and basic laws

Results and Evaluation of Project

Evaluation
● Impact focused evaluation
● Imparted a pre-survey (questions, hand raising) and post-survey
(demonstration) to measure immediate knowledge, attitude, and perception
changes regarding topic
○ Baseline data (how many already wear helmets, how many own a
helmet/bike, etc.) was assessed before intervention was implemented
○ These initial results were then compared to the survey after the event
● Used teach-back methods through games to have kids demonstrate
understanding

Lessons Learned
Reflection on Teaching Project

What worked: team effort, demonstrations (volunteer and


educator), games, and Q&A sessions.

What would we do differently: Ask more questions identifying


need, more calls to action, and more student involvement.

Surprises: Some difficult questions regarding police action


towards vehicles that hit pedestrians, poster board snafu, and
handouts being used as distractions.

Recommendations for Future Student Work

Other Possible Community Interventions

● This is a family-orientated, resource-limited community


● There is a highlighted need to better nutritional education
● Decrease food insecurity through food pantries and better access
● Extend bike and pedestrian safety to adult population, through both education
and physical environment changes
● Programs to aid in tobacco cessation and decrease alcohol-use
● Increase availability to healthcare facilities that give cancer, diabetes, and
hypertension screenings alongside mental and behavioral health services
