TITLE-
Design & Analysis of Multi-
storey Buildings
Problem statement
 The principle objective of the project is to gain the idea of art
and science of analyzing and designing a multi-storey
reinforced concrete building with economy, elegance, safety,
serviceability and durability.
 It also deals with problems involved and to gain ability over
solving the problems.
Introduction
 The foremost basic need in Structural Engineering is the
design of Structural components and members of building
that are slabs, beams, columns and footings. In order to
design them, it is important to first obtain the plan of the
structural building. Such that they serve their respective
purpose and also suiting to the requirement and comfort of
the inhabitants.
 The project deals with the analysis and design of G+10
residential building. The dead loads, live loads and wind loads
are applied and the design for beams, columns and slabs is
obtained by SAP2000.
Background
 Due to concentration and increase of population into urban
cities, there is a need to accommodate the influx in urban
cities. However, due to rapid increase of land cost and limited
availability of land, construction of high rise buildings are
taking part in our daily life.
 The innovative and revolutionary SAP 2000 is the ultimate
integrated software package for the structural analysis and
design of buildings. The entire process of designing requires
not only imagination and conceptual thinking but also sound
knowledge of science of structural engineering besides
knowledge of practical aspects such as relevant design codes
and byelaws backed up by example experience.
Process of topic finalization
 Civil Engineering is all about structures and their
construction. Now the focus is on to make the structure
economical and sustainable. Of all the structures being built
across the world, a high rise building that too residential is
the most common one hence we unanimously with the
guidance of our Guide finalized the topic i.e. Design &
Analysis of Multi-storey building.
Importance and need
 High-rise buildings are product of our time and temporary
solutions for the problems they create. In recent years,
developed countries have emerged as centres for new high
rise buildings. Land is scarce and expensive hence tall
buildings are the best solution when nearly the entire
population is to provide a space.
Objectives of structural design
 Structural design should satisfy the criterion of ultimate strength
 Structure should satisfy the serviceability
 It should satisfy the stability against overturning, sliding and buckling
 Column, beam, slab design are performed using the software in
accordance with the Codes
The project aims at preparing complete RCC Design of G+10 building.
Analysis and designing will be carried out with the help of SAP and as
per Indian Standard guidelines. Structure is designed to resist
earthquake, wind load. Designs will be as per following codes:
IS 456:2000 code for plain and reinforced cement concrete Indian
Standard Plain and Reinforced Concrete Code of Practice IS 456:2000
IS:875(1987) Code of practice for design loads for buildings and structures
Part 1 Dead Loads Part 2 Imposed Loads Part 3 Wind Load
IS 1893:2000 criteria for earthquake resistant design of structures
Scope of work
A G+10 building is to be designed and analyzed at the end of
this project hence the conclusion will cover the complete
analysis of components of frame structure which can be
ultimately utilised in the actual construction of the high rise
building.
Geometric details
 Utility of building residential building
 Location of building- Delhi (Seismic Zone IV)
 Shape of the building: rectangular
 Type of walls: brick wall
 No. Of floors: G+10
 Ground floor height 10’
 Rest all floor height 9’
SAP2000
 SAP2000 is general purpose civil engineering software ideal
for the analysis and design of any type of structural system.
Basic and advanced systems, ranging from 2D to 3D of
simple geometry to complex, may be modeled, analyzed,
designed and optimized using a practical and intuitive object
based modeling environment that simplifies and streamlines
the engineering process.

Literature Review
 Bedabrata Bhattacharjee & A.S.V. Nagender 2007 (NIT
Rourkela): They used STAAD pro for the analysis and design of a
G+21 multi storey building. The dead loads acting on the slab were
calculated manually while live load, seismic load and wind load have
been entered by following respective IS Codes. The design was done
using limit state of design according to IS 456:2000. They showed how
efficiently and easily such a high rise building can be designed within a
very short span of time.

 Suresh & P.M.B Raj Kiran Nanduri 2012: This research paper
focuses on the comparison between earthquake resistant analysis and
design vs. the non-earthquake resistant analysis and design using STAAD
pro. This paper shows that the concrete and reinforcement requirement
for both structures is similar and that there is no higher cost involved in
building a structure with seismic loading.
 Ashis Debashis Behera 2012: This report studied the
comparison between two 30 storey buildings having the same
layout and dimensions but with two different load
combinations
DL+ LL+ Seismic Load
DL+LL+WL
The analysis and design for both the models were done using
STAAD Pro. The results showed that the building with
seismic load combination required more reinforcement than
the building with the wind load combination.
Methodology
The design has been done according to the Limit State Method and
conforming to Indian Standard Code IS 456:2000 for various
structural and non-structural components. The structural
elements like slab, beam, column, footing and staircase has been
designed and detailed.
 Learn the concept of lateral and vertical loading on the building
 Identification of structural arrangement of the plan
 Modelling of the building for the structural analysis
 Detail structure analysis using SAP 2000
 Sectional design of structural components
 Structural detailing of members and the system

Design
 To assess the dead loads and other external loads and forces
likely to be applied on the structure
 To determine the design loads from different combination of
loads
 To estimate structural responses (bending moment, shear
force, axial thrust, deflection etc.) due to design loads
 To determine the cross sectional areas of concrete sections
and amounts of reinforcement needed
Limit State Method
 Limit State Method is used in the design of this structure as
per the guidelines of IS-456:2000.

There are two main limit States:

Limit state of collapse
Limit state of serviceability
