INTRODUCTION
 What is Fuzzy Logic?
 Approach based on "degrees of truth“

 Problem-solving control system methodology

 Linguistic or "fuzzy" variables

 Example:

IF (process is too hot)

AND (process is heating rapidly)
THEN (cool the process quickly)
BACKGROUND
 The idea of fuzzy logic was first advanced by Dr. Lotfi Zadeh of
the University of California at Berkeley in 1965.

 Professor Lotfi Zadeh, UC Berkeley, 1965

“People do not require precise, numerical information
input, and yet they are capable of highly adaptive control.”
Types of Uncertainty
Stochastic Uncertainty:
Definition: having a random probability distribution or pattern that may be analyzed
statistically but may not be predicted precisely.

Lexical Uncertainty:
Definition: In logic, the type of uncertainty that arises from inherent imprecision of human
language, and in particular from the attempt to describe and evaluate real-world situations
using imprecise and often subjective linguistic categories
Types of Uncertainty and the
Modeling of Uncertainty
Stochastic Uncertainty:
 The Probability of Hitting the Target Is 0.8

Lexical Uncertainty:
 "Tall Men", "Hot Days", or "Stable Currencies"
 We Will Probably Have a Successful Business Year.
 The Experience of Expert A Shows That B Is Likely to
Occur. However, Expert C Is Convinced This Is Not True.

Most Words and Evaluations We Use in Our Daily Reasoning Are

Not Clearly Defined in a Mathematical Manner. This Allows
Humans to Reason on an Abstract Level!

Probability and Uncertainty

“... a person suffering from hepatitis shows in

60% of all cases a strong fever, in 45% of all
cases yellowish colored skin, and in 30% of all
cases suffers from nausea ...”

Advantages
 Mimics human control logic

 Uses imprecise language

 Inherently robust

 Fails safely

 Modified and tweaked easily

Disadvantages
 Operator's experience required

 System complexity

APPLICATIONS
The fuzzy washing machine
A load of clothes in it and press start, and the machine begins to churn,
automatically choosing the best cycle.
The fuzzy microwave
Place chili, potatoes, or etc in a fuzzy microwave and push single
button, and it cooks for the right time at the proper temperature.
Self-driving car
It maneuvers itself by following simple installed instructions from
its driver. It can even stop itself when there is an obstacle
immediately ahead using sensors.
