MEMBERS :
LATHE MACHINE :
• A lathe machine is a machine tool which is used to
remove metals from a workpiece to give a desired
shape and size.
• Lathe Machines are used in metalworking, wood
turning, etc.
• The various other operations that you can perform
with the help of Lathe Machine can include turning,
cutting, knurling, drilling, and deformation of tools
that are employed in creating objects which have
symmetry about the axis of rotation.
PARTS OF LATHE
MACHINE :
• Head Stock
• Spindle
• Chuck
• Lathe bed
• Carriage
• Compound rest
• Apron
• Saddle
• Tool Post
• Lead Screw
• Feed Rod
• Tailstock
• Legs
HEAD STOCK :
• Head Stock has the
control of the lathe
machine.
• It houses the spindle.
• The Headstock is also
made up of cast iron.
SPINDLE :
• This is the main part
of the lathe machine
which holds and
rotates the chuck.
• The spindle is the
shaft to which the
tool is attached via a
chuck.
CHUCK :
• Chuck in the lathe machine
is used to hold the
workspace. This is fastened
on the spindle, which rotates
the chuck and the
workpiece.
• There are four jaw chuck
and three jaw chuck.
LATHE BED :
• Bed in the lathe machine is the
main body of the machine. All
main components are mounted
on it.
• The bed is usually made up of
cast iron due to its high
compressive strength and high
lubrication quality.
• It is made by a casting process
and molted on floor area.
CARRIAGE :
• It locates between the
headstock and tailstock.
• It is used to hold and
move the tool post on the
bed vertically and
horizontally.
• It slides on the
guideways. The carriage is
also made up of cast iron.
COMPOUND REST :
• The compound rest in a
lathe machine houses
the tool post while
performing different
lathe operations.
• It can rotate 360 degree.
APRON :
• An apron is attached to the carriage and hangs over
the front side of the lathe bed.
• It is useful in providing power and hand feed to both
carriage and cross-slide.
• It is also used to provide power feed to the carriage
during thread cutting.
SADDLE :
• Saddle is the H part of
the carriage which
helps in moving the tool
post across the
workpiece.
TOOL POST :
• Tool Post on a lathe
machine is placed on
the carriage.
• The main work of tool
post is to hold the
tools at an accurate
position and tool
holder mounted on it.
LEAD SCREW :
• Lead Screw also knew as a
power screw.
• Lead screw locates at the
bottom side of the bed,
which is used to move the
carriage automatically
during the thread cutting
operations.
FEED ROD :
• Feed rod is a power
transmission mechanism
used for precise linear
movement of the
carriage along the
longitudinal axis of the
lathe.
• Used for facing, turning,
etc. operations.
TAILSTOCK :
• It is placed opposite to the
headstock.
• The main function of
tailstock is to support the
job when required and to
hold the drill bit while
performing a drilling
operation.
LEGS :
• Legs are used to carry all the loads of the lathe
machine.
• It locates the floor which prevents vibration.
INSTRUMENTS USED :
• VERNIER CALIPER :
The Vernier caliper is an
extremely precise
measuring instrument used
to measure thickness,
depth, outer and inner
diameter. The least count is
0.02. It consists of Main
scale, Vernier scale, locking
screw, Depth edge.
• VERNIER HEIGHT
GAUGE : A height
gauge is a measuring
device used for
determining
the height of objects,
and for marking of
items to be worked on.
TOOLS USED :
• BALL PEEN HAMMER
: A ball-peen
hammer, is a type
of peening hammer
used
in metalworking. It is
useful for many
tasks, such as
striking punches and
chisels.
• CENTER PUNCH :A
tool consisting of a
metal rod with a
conical point for
making an
indentation, to allow
a drill to make a hole
at the same spot
without slipping.
• DRILL BITS : They are
cutting tools used to
remove material to
create holes, almost
always of circular cross-
section. Drill bits come
in many sizes and shapes
and can create different
kinds of holes in many
different materials.
OBJECTIVE : TO PREPARE A CHUCK
KEY
Raw Material Size: (125X 25)mm
MACHINE OPERATIONS :
• Facing
• Plain Turning
• Step Turning
• Knurling
• Milling
• Drilling
PROCESS :
• Maintain the required length by facing operation.
• Turn one end up to the length of more than 60mm to
the diameter of 24mm.
• Hold the job 20mm diameter and do the rest step by
20mm and 15mm according to the drawing.
• Hold the bigger diameter in indexing head make the end
square according to the drawing using milling machine.
• Drill 12mm hole by in radial drilling machine by hold in
machine vice.
DRAWING :
MILLING MACHINE :
• A milling machine is
a machine tool in which a
horizontal arbor or vertical
spindle rotates a cutting
tool above a horizontal
table, which is used to
move a workpiece.
A milling machine will
shave off small sections of
the metal until the final
product is produced.
DRILLING MACHINE :
• Drilling machine can be
defined as a machine which
makes a circular hole in the
job by removing volume of
the metal from it with the
help of a cutting tool called
drill bit. When drilling is
performed by the drilling
machine the drill bit i.e. the
cutting tool is rotated along
its own axis into the job.
THE FINAL VIEW OF THE JOB WILL BE LIKE THIS :
