CONCLUSION)
CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION, PURPOSE AND GOALS.

Engineering training: It’s one of the main courses in civil engineering at
Kumasi technical university where every student undertakes a 06month
actively industrial attachment.
PURPOSE
The main purpose of this course is to apply the theoretical
knowledge into practical work.
GOALS
theory learnt in the classroom on the field.
To know how to perform and interpret laboratory tests.
CHAPTER TWO
HISTORY OF THE COMPANIES AND THEIR MAJOR
ACTIVITIES

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Limited (AAIL) is a gold mining

company registered in Ghana as a subsidiary of the AngloGold
Ashanti Ghana (AGA).
VISION
To be the leading mining company in the world.
MISSION
To create value for the shareholders.
VALUES
Safety is our first value
Treat each other with dignity and respect
RAMOTH SERVICES

ACTIVITIES OF RAMOTH SERVICES

Constructions of tailings dam
Construction of mining haul roads
Lease of earth moving equipment
MISSION AND VISION OF RAMOTH SERVICES
Ramoth has instituted a five year development plan to increase the
value of their annual executed project value to thirty million ($30)
dollars.
CHAPTER THREE

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL

Determination of Moisture Content
Moisture content, w = M W/ D M x 100 (%). usually heating at ±105C.
Safety aspects

Oven-drying method (standard method)

QA/QC
Determination of Atterberg Limits
The Atterberg limit is used to indicate the plasticity of fine grained soil
by the differentiation between highly plastic, moderately plastic and
non-plastic soils.
Liquid limit test
Plastic limit
QA/QC
Shrinkage limit
Maximum water content at which a reduction of water content will not
cause a decrease in the volume of the soil mass.
Plasticity Index
Plasticity index (Ip or PI) is the range of water content over which the
soil remains in the plastic state.
QA/QC
COMPACTION (STANDARD PROTOCTIST TEST).
the process of increasing soil unit weight by forcing soil solids into a
tighter state and reducing the air voids and thus increasing the stability
and supporting capacity of soil and by so doing, increases the density
Moisture content determination
Container number 62 68 55 73

Mass of wet soil + container 157.9 151.4 140.1 151.5

Mass of dried soil + container 139.7 133.7 123.9 132.8

Mass of moisture 18.2 17.7 16.2 18.7

Mass of container 39.6 38.8 40.3 37.7

Mass of dried soil 100.1 94.9 83.3 95.1

Moisture content 18.2 18.7 19.4 19.7

Average moisture content 18 20

Dry density =100*ρ/100+w

1.31 1.28
Maximum dry density 1.58 1.58

Relative compaction 82.9 81.0

QA/QC
Sand Replacement Test
Calibrations
Calculations
Calculate the mass of sand required to fill the calibrating container;
m0=m1-m4-m2
Calculate the bulk density of the sand; ⍴=m/v
Calculate the bulk density of the soil.ρsoil mw/mb*⍴
Calculate the dry density ; ρd = ρ ⁄1+w
Calculate the in-situ relative compaction; RC= ρd/MDD*100
QA/QC
Particle size analysis
This is a method of separation of soils into different fractions based on
particle size
Particle size distribution curve
represents the distribution of particles of different sizes in the soil
mass.
 Uses of particle size distribution curve
The particle size distribution curve is used in the classification of
coarse-grained soils.
The particle size distribution provides an index to the shear strength
of the soil.
GPS SURVEY SURVEYING
GLOBAL POSITION SYSTEM is a method used in survey where the
positioning in which the coordinates X, Y, and Z of a survey stations are
determined by reception and analysis of NAVSTAR satellite signals.
Importance of GPS in Survey
No line of sight is required.
Operators do not need high levels of skill.
Disadvantages of GPS in survey
A good electronic view of the sky is required.
The equipment concerned is expensive.
SURVEY
Sources of errors
Natural
Instrumental
TAPING MISTAKES AND ERRORS
Misreading the tape
Ranging
It means fixing a series of pegs or other marks such that they all lie
on a straight line.
Flagging of pegs
Flagging tapes are hanged limply and drooping on the pegs indicating
the level at which the next layer will be the filled up to.
SURVEY
Offsetting
The area lying between the chainage lines and the boundaries of the
site.
TRAVEREING
Traversing is establishing series of control points, each being intervisible
with the adjacent stations, are carefully selected and fixed.
Required measurements in traversing
The angles between successive lines
The length of each traverse line
EARTH-WORKS
Earthworks
Earthwork is a construction work involving excavating, earthmoving,
and building embankment.
Placement of material.
Treatment of placed material
Compaction
EARTHWORK
DECANTING AND CONCRETE WORKS

Decant System
CONCRETE WORKS
Concrete batching
Workability of concrete
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST
ESTIMATING THE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL REQUIRED TO PREPARE ONE
CUBIC METER OF M20 GRADE TO CUBIC CONCRETE. IS 1199 (1959) CODE
OF PRACTICE.

Calculating of volume of materials required
