Assumptions of Arts

• * The word “art” comes from the ancient Latin, ars which means a “craft or
specialized form of skill, like carpentry or surgery”.
1. Art is universal
in every country and in every generation, there is always art.
Age is not a factor in determining art.
2. Art is not nature
art is man’s expression of his reception of nature.
man’s way of interpreting nature.
3. Art involves experience
experience- actual doing of something.
Art is known by experiencing.
Art Appreciation: Creativity, Imagination, and
Expression
• * It takes an artist to art.
• Not everyone can be considered an artist.
Art Appreciation as a Way of Life
• Jean-Paul Sartre, a famous French Philosopher of the 20th century, described
the role of art as a creative work that depicts the world in a completely
different light and perspective.
• Each artwork beholds beauty of its own kind.
• In cultivating an appreciation of art, one should also exercise and develop his
taste for things that are fine and beautiful. This allows individuals to make
intelligent choices and decisions in acquiring necessities and luxuries.
The Role of Creativity in Art Making
• Creativity requires thinking outside the box.
• In art, creativity is what sets apart one artwork from another.
• A creative artist does not simply copy or imitate another artist’s work.
• Creativity should be backed with careful research on related art to avoid
conflicts.
Art as a Product of Imagination, Imagination
as a Product of Art
• “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to
all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire
world, and all there will be to know and understand” (Albert Einstein)
• Something imaginary does not necessary mean it cannot be called art. Artists
use their imagination that gives birth to reality through creation.
Activity
• Instruction:
• 1. Imagine your favorite outfit (dress, pants, shorts, t-shirt, etc.)
• 2. Draw your favorite outfit.
• 3. In two paragraphs with 6-10 sentences, describe in detail your favorite
outfit (e.g.: color, texture, cloth)
* you may include the feeling/s you feel every time you wear that outfit.
Art as Expression
• An emotion will remain unknown to a man until he expresses it.
• According to Robin George Collingwood (an English philosopher), what an
artist does to an emotion is not to induce it, but express it.
• Expressing an emotion is different from describing an emotion.
