What is Hyper-Threading ?

 Hyper-Threading technology is an innovative design

from Intel enables multi-threaded software
applications to execute threads in parallel on a single
processor instead of processing threads in a linear
fashion.
 Simultaneous multi-threading is called then
Hyper Threading .
How Hyper-Threading Works?

 Hyper Threading based processor is considered as

two logical processors.
 The first logical processor can track one software
thread, while second logical processor can track
another software thread Simultaneously.
 Both threads share the same resources.
 If the first thread uses the resources, then second is
remain ideal and if second thread uses the resources
then first thread is remain ideal.
 So, multi-threaded application can now take
advantage of Thread Level Parallelism (TLP).
How Hyper-Threading Works?

 Hyper Threading Technology also increases CPU

utilization and perform a specific task at a less time.
 For Example: A Computer running a PowerPoint
Presentation and Antivirus software in a background
 In a System without Hyper Threading the CPU switches
from one application to another,by producing one
thread for each application.
 And with Hyper Threading ,the thread of second
application will be added up to the unused resources of
the first thread, processing at the same time.
 So,Hyper threading technology can boost CPU
utilization up to 50%.

HT increases the speed of the computer

 (HT) allows execution of multiple threads in parallel

on a single processor. In some applications, HT
provides a significant speed increase. Also, for typical
operating system use (Windows XP), HT can improve
system response times
 Hyper-Threading Technology also delivers faster
response times for multi-tasking workload
environments By allowing the processor to use on-
die resources that would otherwise have been idle,
Hyper-Threading Technology provides a performance
boost on multi-threading and multi-tasking
operations

Current Status

 HT Technology is available on Intel Xenon processors
and Intel Pentium 4 processors.
 The following Operating Systems have been
optimized for Hyper-Threading Technology:

WinXP Pro
  WinXP
HE
  Linux version 2.4.x (and higher)
 The following OS does not support HT Technology
Win2000(all versions)
WinNT 4.0
WinME
Win98SE
Current Status
 Along with the launch of the P4 processor,
Intel also announced a list of motherboard
chipsets supporting the new technology.
 These are the Intel 845PE, 845GE, 845GV and
850E. Boards based on these chipsets are also
capable of delivering 533MHz Front Side Bus
speed.
Compaq Motherboards Support for HT
Technology

To disable Hyper-Threading:
1.       Press F9 at POST to enter ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU)
2.       From the Main Menu, select Advanced Options
3.       From the Advanced Options menu, select Hyper-Threading
4.       Select Disabled.
Hyper-Threading Technology offers many
benefits to e-Business and the enterprise such
as:

 Enables more user support improving business

productivity
 Provides faster response times for Internet and e-
Business applications enhancing customer experience
 Increases number of transactions that can be
processed
 Allows compatibility with existing IA-32 applications
and operating systems
 Handles larger workloads
 Offers headroom for future business growth and new
solution capabilities
