INTRODUCTION

Set up in 1961 as a green-field project in technical collaboration with ALCO/USA

to Manufacture Diesel Electric Locomotives.
First locomotive rolled out and dedicated to nation in January, 1964.
Transfer-of-Technology agreement signed with General Motors/ USA in October,
95 to manufacture state-of-the-art high traction AC-AC diesel locomotives.
 A flagship company of Indian Railways offering complete range of flanking
products in its area of operation.
State of the art Design and Manufacturing facility to manufacture more than 150
locomotives per annum with wide range of related products viz. components and
sub-assemblies.
A large base of delighted customers among many countries viz. Sri Lanka,
Malaysia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Tanzania to name a few, bearing testimony to
product leadership in its category .

TRUCK MACHINE SHOP

First week I have seen Truck Machine Shop (TMS). In this shop
they make wheel, axle. After making axle and wheel they
assemble the axle and wheel. In TMS the -assembled wheel,
axle, bull gear, bearing cap of axle etc.
Bogie :-There are two types of bogie
• Co-Co bogie- bogie has three axles and six wheels
• Bo-Bo bogie- bogie has two axles and four wheels
Manufacturing of bogie: There are two of manufactured
bogies
1. Fabricated bogie
2. Casting bogie
PARTS OF BOGIE

Bogie Frame
Axle
Wheel
Bull Gear
Suspension Tube
Axle Boxes
Traction Motor
Air Pipe
Brake Rigging Items
BOGIE FRAME

A bogie is a wheeled wagon or trolley. In mechanics terms,

a bogie is a chassis or framework carrying wheels, attached
to a vehicle. Bogie on which super structure and under
frame is mounted. It is two type Co-Co and Bo-Bo bogie.
Co-Co has three axles and six wheel and Bo-Bo has two
axles and four wheels.
AXLE

EMD engine axle has three hole but in ALCO engine

axle has eight holes.
WHEEL
BULL GEAR
AXLE BOXES

Axle box suspensions absorb shocks between the axle

bearings and the bogie frame.
The axle box suspension usually consists of a spring
between the bogie frame and axle bearings to permit up-
and-down movement, and sliders to prevent lateral
movement. A more modern design uses solid rubber
springs
TRACTION MOTOR

Electric motor providing the primary rotational torque of

a machine, usually for conversion into linear motion. DC
series-wound motors, running on approximately 600
volts.
CONCLUSION

Working on this project was a pleasure for me as I learned lot of things which was
unknown to me before doing this project. I worked a several shops. My learning
description includes regular updating status to know about all related to production
unit, diesel generating sets and their spares for Indian railways and non-Indian
customers.
I tried to give my best effort on this project but it could be better if I would have
theoretical knowledge before taking this project. As this topic was new to me and due to
time constraint I was not able to go through each and every procedure in details.
The mechanical maintenance department experience I have gained here in DLW gave
me knowledge of to what extent my theoretical knowledge learnt in the college is
applicable in the field.
Although the theoretical knowledge forms the base of practical knowledge required on
the field, the field job also requires some different set of skills which I have learnt about
during my training.
My skills in mechanical engineering has definitely been taken to a much higher level
that it was when I first joined this training program of 4 weeks back and I truly consider
myself fortunate to get this opportunity.
