RNC control plane processing board
(RCB) Configuration

RNC user plane processing board

(RUB) Configuration

Interface board Configuration

Auxiliary boards
RCB Consideration
 RCB is dimensioned based on following factors:
 Cell number

 Node B number

Parameter Value
RCB support cells 410->420(U9.3)

RCB support BHCA 500K

 RCB board is configured by 1+1 redundancy principle.

 Quantity of RCB boards =
Ceiling( MAX (【RNC managed Cell number / 420】,【RNC BHCA /
500K】), 1) * 2
= Ceiling (Max (3000/420, 3000/500),1)*2=16
RNC Signaling Board Consideration

 Besides, RCB board also takes the responsibility

to process signaling. This kind of RCB board is
logically called RSB (RNC Signaling Board). Here
is a simple way to calculate the quantity of RSB.
RCB Quantity RSB Quantity

<=10 2
12<=RCB<=20 4
>20 6

 Totally for the RNC 20 RCB boards should be

configured.
RCB Dimensioning Example
 For example, if one RNC is planned to deploy 100 S1/1/1
type NodeB, 100 S2/2/2 type NodeB and 1000K BHCA
 Calculation result:
NodeB number 200

Cell number 900

Ceiling(Cell Number per RNC / 410) = Ceiling(900 / 420) = 3

Ceiling(Node B Number per RNC / 140) = Ceiling(200 / 140) = 2
Ceiling(RNC BHCA / 500) = Ceiling(1000 / 500) = 2
So, RCB is equal to the larger one, 3.
 Considering 1+1 backup, RCB board should be double as 6
 Considering signaling processing boards, 2 more RCB
boards are needed.
 Consequently, total RCB boards = 6+2 = 8
BHCA Calculation Methodology
BHCA = RAB + 0.55*RRC + 0.4*HO + 0.38*CC + 0.38*DRBC
+ 0.15*ALCAP

 RAB means Radio Access Bearer.

 RRC means Radio Resource Connection.
 HO means hand over.
 CC means call connection.
 DRBC means dynamic Radio Bearer connection.

BHCA is necessary factor for the board dimensioning in Control Plane.

The BHCA is an equivalent value of all signal procedures in traffic
model, and the coefficient is the test result in Lab.

 RUB works in load sharing mode.
 The expansion of RUB has 14 normal levels and 2 extensive levels, each
containing two RUB boards. The maximum RUB number in one RNC is 28.

Interface Board Capacity

 The interface boards are dimensioned based on

two factors:
 Data throughput
 Connection Port
 GIPI4 Capability
 The GIPI4 capability is 1.4Gbps for each direction.
Taking consideration of 50% redundancy, one board
will support 700Mbps for one direction.
 The GIPI capability is 900Mbps.

Transmission overhead (%)

Iub transmission overhead for CS service 33% 70%

Iub transmission overhead for PS service 20% 14%

Iub transmission overhead for Uu Signaling 38% 64%

IuCS transmission overhead 29% 72%

IuPS transmission overhead 17% 14%

 Definition:
Transmission overhead = head length/(head length + payload length)
The transmission overhead needs to be considered for different
service. Different transmission type, different value.

IuB-PS 3216 14% 3739.5
Note:
Iu-PS Payload = 300Mbps * 16 * 0.67 = 3216Mbps
IuB-CS Payload = 10000Erl*12.2kbps(AMR)/1000=122Mbps

GIPI4 Boards = Ceiling【Iu interface throughput / 1400Mbps/Transmission

load, 1 】*2
Interface Boards Configuration
Iu-CS&Iu-PS&Iur interface:
we assume 30% of CS services will be in the border of RNC, and 18% of them will go
across Iur interface, 2* is for both direction;
For PS services over Iur, DSCR or relocation will be used, so not taken into consideration
GIPI4 Board = Ceiling ((435.7(1+2*30%*18%)+3739.5)/1400/0.5, 1) = 7

Iub interface:
18% Soft handover factor also should be taken into consideration
GIPI4 Board = Ceiling ((406.7*(1+18%)+3739.5)/1400/0.5, 1) = 7

OMCB:
We need another two GIPI4 boards(1+1) for the interface for OMCB

The total amount of GIPI4 boards would be 2*7+2 = 16

The Iur interconnects different RNCs in order to support handover
procedures between two different RNCs areas. This specific
handover is called drift handover (DHO). The user data traffic and
signaling traffic is transmitted over the Iur interface.

For practical project experiences, the transmission bandwidth of Iur

is set as 9% for Iu interface.

CE Definition
 One Channel Element is the baseband resource required
in the Node-B to provide capacity for one voice channel
including control plane signaling, compressed mode,
transmit diversity and softer handover.
CE Features
 Channel elements are pooled in Node B.
 No additional CE resource is needed for CCH.
 The baseband processing board can process uplink and
downlink resource separately.
 The processing resource consumed by softer handover
has been reserved, so softer handover doesn’t consume
more CE.
 ZTE’s baseband processing board has special chip to
process with the traffic of HS-PDSCH and HS-SCCH. So
HSDPA downlink traffic will not consume CE.
 HSUPA shares CE resource with R99 services.
