DEFINITION

 also known as telescoping of bowel, invagination of bowel.

 The term refers to invagination of a part of intestine distally into an
adjacent part.
 The invaginated portion is “intussusceptum” and the outer
enseathing portion is “intussuscipiens”.
SUSCEPTIBILITY

 it is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in cattle and

sheep.
 It is seen in small puppies but rarely in adult dogs.
 Occasional cases have been reported in other animals.
Part of intestine involved

 Intussusception usually occurs in the jejunum and ileum and rarely in the
colon.
 Ileo- ileal i.e., confined to the ileum.
 Ileo- caecal. Portion of ileum getting into the caecum.
 Caeco- caecal i.e., confined to the caecum.
 Caeco- colic. Portion of caecum getting into the colon.
 Ileo-caeco-colic.
ETIOLOGY

 Vigorous peristalsis
 Due to inflammation and drinking of cold water.
 Abcess or polyps associated with intestinal lumen.
 In pups as a complication in canine distemper, worm
infestation.
CLINICAL SIGNS

 signs start suddenly

 Anorexia and signs of colic
 Colic is usually transient
 In pups vomition and straining is observed
 Faeces gradually decreases till complete cessation
 Abdomen show symmetrical bilateral distension
 Pulse rate is increased
 Rectum is usually empty containing blood tinged mucus
DIAGNOSIS
 Based on clinical signs
 On rectal palpation sausage shape structure us felt
 By contrast radiography using barium meal in pups
 On ultrasound examination a typical onion ring shape image
of the invaginated part
 In large animal confirmation by exploratory laparotomy.
Treatment:-

 Sometimes it may be corrected automatically with faeces.

 Fluid therapy is must to counteract dehydration.
 Right flank laparotomy is performed and the invagination is
corrected by gentle traction. By squeezing the
intussusception while applying gentle traction to the
intussusceptum.
 Enterectomy to remove necrosed part.
 Enteroplication to prvent the reoccurrence of this condition
Enterectomy:-
Enterplication
